I/O Device Error Post a Reply
From: Ritchie on 12/17/2002
I'm gonna try to explain my problem as simple as possible. I've got a Compaq Deskpro EN Series PC running Windows XP Pro. I have 2 drives on installed 1-10G and 1-3G. Up to about 2 weeks ago all was well when suddenly the files on my 3g drive became inaccessible. I went nuts trying to figure out what the hell was going on. Until today I still don't know. I've run a virus check on the 3g drive and came up with zero virus's. Basically all I have on it are music files. Now every time I want to access anything on the drive I get an error message that says "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. Whether I'm just trying to play a tune or copy a tuine from the 3g to the 10g I still get the same message. SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP ME!!!!! I'm desperate for an answer, who knows maybe the answer is so simple I'll hit myself over the head with a beer bottle, or it could be a bit more complicated. In any case I hope someone can really help me find an answer, Thanks, Ritchie. PLease email me at twoxcl@hotmail.com

I was getting a device i/o error and also sometimes a Data Error (Cyclic Redundancy Check) error when I tried to move or copy certain files from a Maxtor One Touch external hard drive. I did this below and all the error messages stopped and I could move and copy all the files that caused these errors: (WIN XP)
start
run
chkdsk e: /r
(e=Maxtor one touch drive).
try it!

My Mp3 player can't read any of the music on it and dosen't read that it has built in memory (256MB) but when I put in an SD card I can read Music off of that. And when I hook it up to my computer the memory is there, though most of the files are missing and when I run the disk defrag I get some other bullshit answer; and the same goes for the disk check. It says something about an I/O device error.

My CD-RW started acting up about 2 days ago, i've tried all i can think of to rectify the problem, when i put a cd in, it looks like its reading it, then the indicator light flashes until i take the cd out. If i click on the D: drive it says "The CD-RW could not be performed because of an I/O device error" but then when i access the properties it says the device is working fine. I burned a cd about 3 days ago, then after that nothing, it doesnt even recognize theirs anything in there....

im so lost, please help

Your problem could be the jumper and the power supply not giving enough juice to run everything. I had the same problem with a 350W power supply that came with the machine after I added another hdd and dvd drive, I bought an expensive 350w p/s and it worked ok since

I have the same problem, only its with my Yamaha CDRW 8824EZ. Until a few days ago it ran perfectly, and ive had it for over a year. I had to reinstall windows (XP) and once it was installed, it did not work at all. I have another dvd drive connected to my comp so i can still insert cds to install stuff... anyway, i tried everything i can possibly think of, including switching the master/slave jumpers, having one drive in at a time, "rollback" the driver, disable some of my components (just in case it was interfering with my cdr drive), etc. nothing works... it doesnt even spit out the cd... its as if it was writing a cd, and it auto-locked itself. i also tried to upgrade the firmware, but its not being recognized by windows as a cdrw, therefore the firmware update cannot find it either. even when i try to click on it in windows explorer i get an error message like this:

F:\ is not accessible
The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.

I also do not know what else to do so if ANYONE has ANY, and i mean ANY suggestions, PLEASE POST!!!

Thanks a mil!

I bought a new computer about a week ago. When I insert a disk into my samsung cd-rw drive, the indicator light flashes for about ten minutes, meanwhile the disk sounds like its being read all this time. I went to check the status of the drive and I can't access it because of an I/O error. Can somone please help me. ASAP

My comp. stats:
p4 @2.4 ghz
512 RAM
60 gb hd
52*24*52 samsung cd-rw drive
radeon 9200 pro 128mb

Run a Defragment. This will pick up any hard drive failure possibilities. If you are having problems running defrag, you may need to consider a new hard drive.

Try switching cables with your CDROM or if you have another around switch to that. I am not sure if you have ATA100 or 133 drives. If so, make sure it is an 80 rather than a 40 (smaller wires and more of them - same connector). This could be an indication of a bad cable. A 3 GIG hard drive will most likely be ATA33 and the standard 40-pin cable will work fine.

I think I would consider the hard drive as failed. It is quite old and NOT irregular to fail at this age.

Could it be as easy as the master/slave jumpers not being set properly? Cable select has never worked for me, so if you have that as a selection you need to fix it.
What happens if you only have one drive at a time?
