Win 98 "EMM386 has detected error #a6 in an a Post a Reply

When booting into Win98 I get the above error message, plus an additional sentence which states "press Enter to continue". However pressing Enter has no effect and the only way out the sitution is to reboot which creates an endless loop with no way out. Any suggestions on how to break the cycle gratefully received.

tks

Ok, I somehow managed to solve it.

1. I booted from a startup disk and looked to make sure emm386.exe and himem.sys were present. They were.
2. I renamed autoexec.bat and config.sys so they wouldn’t run on boot up.
3. I rebooted and then went to msconfig where I selected a step-by-step start up. I also changed back the names of autoexec.bat and config.sys
4. I rebooted again with no problem, went back to msconfig and added system.ini and win.ini back to the boot sequence.
5. I rebooted and got a blue screen error, rebooted again and had no problems.

Maybe someone can explain why that worked. Additionally, I am frequently plagued by screen lock ups the past two months or so. Me thinks I have a memory problem. Oh well, it is probably time for a new PC anyway. Mine is circa 2000.

I have this exact same problem with Win 98, but I can't get into "Safe Mode", I get the Windows startup screen then the same message immediately:

"EMM386 has detected error #a6 in an application at address 000A:0133. To minimize chance of data loss, EMM386 has halted you computer. For more information consult your documentation. To restart you computer press Enter."

Pressing Enter does not work for me either. Any suggestions? Should I boot from a start-up disk?

have you tried to boot the pc into safe mode and then use the system configuration utility and msconfig to disable all startup programs and drivers etc, then its a case of narrowing down each area by restarting the computer and enabling one section at a time within system config utility and msconfig.
