PC hangs regularly Post a Reply
From: Mike on 12/29/2002
My config is Intel MB, PIII, 128mb ram, 80GB drive, GForce 3DBlaster 4 MX460, WinXP.

Problem is regular crashes. PC totally hangs, can't ALTCNTRLDEL have to reset.

I have tried loads of things to try to solve, but wout luck. I have just purchased Norton AntiVirus SW, and found out that it hangs consitantly at the same place when running virus checker. It hangs at C:\windows\driver cache\i386. Could this be a clue to the problem?

Does anyone have any suggestions of what can be going wrong?

Cheers

Hey Mike, got the exact same problem as you: XP, same directory, same absolute hang, Geforce card, Norton AV hangs at c:\windows\driver cache\i386. Email me at scair@charter.net if you figure anything out or if you want to check and see if I find a solution!

I am guessing that you did not get any error messages regarding this. In addition, I bet your computer just completely locks up or restarts itself.

If this is the case, your problems is related to hardware. Check for multiple devices sharing the same IRQ. If so, move PCI devices to other slots to try to get Windows XP to release the current IRQ address and assign a new one. This is a real problem with Windows NT operating systems.

If you recently installed a hardware device, you may find that to be your culprit as well.

In addition, I would automatically install an updated driver for your video card. Those GeForce cards are not exactly 'stable'. Find the most updated driver!

Also, if you did an 'over-install' of a prevous operating system without re-formating your hard drive, you are asking for all kinds of trouble. There is a good chance you are running hardware on incorrect driver versions. Make sure to have all XP drivers for your hardware.

Hope this helps.
