Cannot Access Bios. XP Operating system Post a Reply
From: Kareem on 12/06/2002
I have a Hp 520C and utilisze XP as my operating system. I was removing the Win 32 klez virus from my computer...was almost successful and the computer froze. When i restarted, no windows were present. It loads fine, but there is no windows to access anything....

I have tried to enter the Bios, but all it does is take me to a black screen with the option to choose safe mode, last good known configuration....however I cannot choose anything...my arrow keys do not work...

I need to know if I can enter the BIOS and a way to do it, or if it is a by-product of the virus. If it is a by-product of the virus, how can I repair?

I know the problem was old but figured if it came up in Google, someone else would want to know how to get into the BIOS.

Try the F1 key at the HP LOGO screen to get into the BIOS. Here is HP's web page on the Pavillion 520c and getting into the BIOS. This page is for Updating the BIOS so just use the info for the BIOS key.

You may need to change the boot order in the BIOS to get it to read the CD drive.

F2, Del, F10, and F12 are other possible BIOS/configuration access keys. Just keep trying until one works.

Hold down DEL key, some use TAB, some use F10 or F12 or others, if sticker is on chip go to that web site and search

This is NOT caused by the Klez virus. You must have some other virus on your computer as well.

In addition, you have not posted any specific error message so it will be difficult to help you with your problem.

The 'Safe Mode' and 'Last Known Good Configuration' are options for your operating system. They are NOT a part of your BIOS. Therefore, Windows is still there and will allow you access to files.

I do not believe that you need to get into the BIOS. If you cannot get into your operating system (again, not sure of your error message/problem), I would try both 'last known...' and 'safe mode'. If neither works, then I would try a repair to your Windows. You can do this be putting the install CDROM into your computer and restarting. It will go through the normal install routine and then finally ask you if you want to install. Then it will find your Windows directory and ask you if you want to repair. Choose the manual option first (select all the available repairs). If this does not work, try the automatic option. If this does not work, I would do a reinstall. This should not delete your files but will cause conflicts with your drivers and programs.

Feel free to post back with more information regarding your specific error message.
