Windows 98 SE freezing/hanging - reboot required Post a Reply
From: Kevin on 08/07/2001
My system continues to freeze with no particular pattern. This often occurs when selecting save as... and then attempting to select a folder from my directory structure. To fix the problem I have to reboot and it will happen again if the computer is left on for a few hours.

Some programs installed are: Office 2000, McAfee, Money98

System: AMD-K6 3D, 64 MB RAM

Any suggestions...similar issues?

Hi, I've had the same problem but mine only occurred when I wasn't connected to the internet. I have a one-way cable modem and as long as I'm connected I don't hang.

: I had the same problem and was told to kep temps cleared and run scan disk and defrag regular...did this and still not cure it so I went back to windows 98...there's not that much difference except now I don't freze up! ~smiles

This could be caused by many differant things. You may want to look into your memory and processor, they could be going down hill. It may be a heat issue, so check to make sure all of your case fans are running properly. If they are, try running the system with the case open and a fan blowing in on it. You may also just try reseating your motherboard connections, or pulling out differant pieces of hardware and running it to see if that resolves the issue. If you have a network card, pull it to see how it goes. There a ton of other things that could be causeing this, both hardware and software. If none of the above work, try ending task on everything in the back ground, then reload the operating system if necessary. If it still doesn't work I would then suggest replacing the Memory and then the processor if necessary.

Please see the following also posted w/my reply.

"fatal exception 0E@0028 - jo 7/06/2001 (1) "

McAfee Antivirus software appears to be the culprit.

I've read both of the problem and response, and I too have the same trouble which seems to appear when I have MSN hotmail or IM open.

I too, have McAfee Antivirus software, which I understand may contribute to getting blue screened and nothing but a hard boot seems to help.

The 2 fatal exception errors I receive in succession (only when MSN is open) are:

..."Fatal exception 0E at 0028:C001545A has occurred...application will be terminated. Press any key to continue."

Then, "Fatal exception OD AT 0246:014747FB has occurred...application will be terminated. Press any key to continue."

I suspect McAfee has a conflict with Microsoft Internet Explorer (I'm using v5.50.4807.2300IS) and/or Microsoft Windows 98 2nd Edition v4.10.222A.

Your thoughts?

My thoughts. I get the same error message (@0028:C001545A) And I have IE6, with no Antivirus whatsoever. This computer never has... I can get the error when I'm doing something (On the net) or when I'm doing nothing. When I'm not even at it. I can come back to it after an hour or so and there it is... frozen... I can prss space and I can see my desktop... I can even run windows-if you can picture a 80286 running Windows 98...

So, what's the reason?
It's one of two things. (For me anyway)
Only two things are ALWAYS running when I get the error MSG. It could also be the combination of these two things... but anyway...

1)-DirecPC's Navigator
It's not there after the computer does blue SOD.
2)-Internet Connection Sharing
When I'm not using this there are no blue SODs.

IF someone could help me get these to work happily together I would be happy...
The only other thing I can do would be to use Satserv, which costs 1500 bucks... and it's only software.

(Or try to use a router, although it'd be difficult since the sat connects through a USB)

I'm not asking for a Satserv 6 crack or anything...
And I wouldn't pay a little for an enterprise key...

Thanks for your help
