Constant random fatal exeption in VXD error messag Post a Reply
From: Trish on 06/05/2002
After installing 128MB memory card and a cd burner in my computer I am getting constant random fatal exeption in VXD error messages. My last fix was to run an Fdisk and completely format and recover. As soon as I booted up - there was the error message. I tried putting my old cd-rom back, it didn't work, I tried taking out the new memory card it didn't help. I'm running windows 98 on an HP Pavilion PC Model 6563z, Intel Celeron 500 Megahertz processor 64MB original RAM, 13GB hard drive with a Iomega zip drive. The original modem/sound card crashed about 6 months ago and I installed a Diamand Supra modem and a Creative Sound Blaster sound card. I had no problems until I installed the memory and burner. I tried disabling the sound card because I read that there are sometimes problems with it, it didn't help. I uninstalled McAfee because a lot of the VXD messages were in MCSCAN, it didn't work. Any suggestions? I am pulling out my hair here.

I am sure that you are running WIN 98. Gotta love those error messages...

You can check out microsofts support page (support.microsoft.com) for KBA #281965 and Q302833 on how to fix the issue.

You are correct. Your McAfee is outdated and conflicting with Windows. Microsoft recommends you update your version of McAfee (you should have this up to date anyway, there are some nasty viruses out there!).

Another solution is to disable the 'Vsstat.exe' (which is the virus scanning executable - so removing it from your system would be the better answer).

Try Norton Antivirus 2002 (regualar version - no premium or internet utilities or other garbage). It slows your system down a little but I use it in the business environment and am very happy with it! You can probably get the competitive upgrade and it would only cost you 25 or 30 bucks.
