I run excel 97 as part of Office 97 Professional Edition on a 2000+ AMD running WinME.
I have run this excel without incident for years. Problem occurred recently.

Have tried most of Anil's 12/10/02 "solutions" to similar problem "Excel.exe cause an illegal operation" posted by Donna 12/5/01

The message Excel has caused an error in Excel.exe is this the correct message,

if so then try a reboot of the PC or look at re-installing MS office 97 or Excel 97.

If you take your installation CD quuite often you have a choice of options to choose from, either to uninstall Ms-office 97 or Excel 97
as well as to repair the file. You can locate the file and re-name it to Excel.old and then run the repair option given to you on the CD.
