Aol Companion error keep poping up when I reboot my computer. My Operating System is ME. I run Aol 8.0 again, but it did nothing for missing files. To me this is a bug. Some time it freeze my computer. I have to manually shut down my computer. This will be my third time rebooting my computer.

People if we are so upset with the service AOL is giving US then we are the fools for staying with them as your Internet Provider. There are two meny out there to settle for poor service. They can not or will not fix the problem, if enough of US move to MSN, Earthlink or one of the other they will get off the money and time to fix the problemS. We have the power. They won't fix it move.
If they do not strighten mine out I will move.

I had the companion error and my javascript was disabled. I finally gave up on AOL, they were useless, telling me to install and re-install my software. This actually appears to be a browser problem. I finally contacted my support people for my computer and was given the solution which worked for me. What a relief!! I went to the Microsoft.com website and reloaded the Internet Explorer (and there are also other internet tools along with that). Everything seems to working fine. So I would suggest to others, if nothing else has worked, try that. (I downloaded IE6).

Unfortunately once I got the AOL Companion error, another strange thing happened. My JavaScript is disabled (even though my settings say it is not) and I can no longer use my online banking or anything that uses javascript (which is most everything these days!) I have been working with several different techs and they all basically say to install and re-install which of course does nothing. I have disabled the companion as per previous emails but my javascript still does not work. Has anyone else had this problem and perhaps had success in fixing it?

Just a sidenote-AOL Customer Service is comprised of a bunch of lackeys who don't have any type of certifications and are getting paid minimum wage to look your problems up on an more in depth "Help" search program that comes with AOL. 9 out of 10 times the answer for any fix is "please try reinstalling AOL" :)

AOL COMPANION ERROR! I installed 8.0 on a system running an early version of MS XP Pro and got a "script" error. Most common "script" errors are due to conflicts in the browser (i.e. MS Internet Explorer). This may or may not be the error that many of you see, but if it is try this. Go to your browser website, Microsoft.com for Internet Explorer and download the current version of your browser, IE 6.0 for most of us:) Then run the setup program to update your browser...need to be online to run this. After all the updates are complete, restart computer then try reinstalling AOL. Hint: TO SAVE ACCOUNT PREFERENCES, Copy your "organize" folder from your AOL account. [Program Files>America Online 8.0>organize] Then paste it where you will find it later, i.e. "My Documents" and replace it when the reinstall is done. AOL Companion seems to work with the newest updated Internet Explorer 6.0 - and has some neat features too. Microsoft is constantly updating their software so it's a GOOD idea to check up on them periodically...especially Internet Explorer:)

I don't use AOL all that much (I Have MSN at work) so this may sound stupid, but WHERE DO YOU GO TO TURN THE AOL COMPANION OFF? I get a big grey box come up with the AOL Companion error and then AOL tries to automatically start...to top it off, it looks for the AOL disc in the drive and won't let me put any other disc in it. I'm afraid if I uninstall AOL, then I won't be able to install anything else because my drive is screwed up....

I found this site with a Google search for "Companion" error message. After reading the replys, I followed Anne's advice and uncheck the box to "automatically display AOL companion" and so far I am not getting the error message again. A similar thing happened awhile ago with AOL's Shopping Assistant. Apparently AOL randomly decides to mess with my settings and give me headaches. Anyway, Anne's suggestion worked and thank you Anne for the advice.

Read the post from "anne" below, just turn it off! Consider getting rid of AOL as your Internet Service Provider ISP, it's easy to switch to something like earthlink or juno.

locate the AOL icon on the lower right side of your screen near the system clock. right click it and select AUTO START OPTIONS from the menu. uncheck AUTOMATICALLY DISPLAY AOL COMPANION then click OK.

You know you don't need AOL to use AIM !
There's no reason to stick to AOL, I don't know why people pay so much and waste money. AOL is not the internet!
Go get earthlink, netzero or some other real ISP and have a life and some extra bucks in your pocket and way less frustration, spyware etc...

I'm not alone?????? AOL made me think so! I called Microsoft today for a tidy sum "per incident." They worked with me for three and a half hours without solving the stinking "Companion (not working) or whatever the stupid message is.
I downloaded a spyware cleaner and it did help. At least I can get on for one session. Then I lock up. I've been at this for months. I'm on a mission. But it's sad when AOL refers one to MS for help with their program.

I too have had problems with the AOL Companion error messages. However, I did not have a problem UNTIL I had printer problems which led me to Dell's customer service. They suggested that I reinstall my XP Operating System. I have had these damn messages every since. I have noticed on my computer that I do NOT get the message on Administrative users. Only the Limited users accounts on my computer get this error. My limited users are young children whose capabilities I want to stay limited, but now I can't. Now I don't see the whole reasoning in having a screen name to get in. I too hope they can find the answer to the problem or I will be using another provider.

Hi All! :)

I had this problem too on my Xp PC.

Do this for Xp. If you have a different type of win version you could probably do the same to, but this is what I did for Xp version Windows.

Note: I am not responsible if you do it wrong, please just follow the instructions. :D

How to Fix any Errors on Your Pc.

1. PUt Your "Windows Xp Home Edition" Cd in.

2. Restart Pc before it starts up.

3. Now your pc is starting up. It will say "Press any key to Boot from cd..." Press any key quickly. At the top of the screen you will see the words "Windows Setup", now at the bottom you will see the words "Setup is loading files." It will take around a minute. Press Enter.

4. After pressing enter on your keyboard, now it will find your recent xp. It will ask you if you want to repair it. Press "R" to repair it.

5. Installation will take around 45 min. During installation it might say certain things aren't compatible, if it says that, press yes you want to install them unless it was the program that you think caused the error on your pc, then of course say no.

6. Your Pc should work fine now, ERROR FREE, OR AT LEAST IT SHOULDN'T SAY THE AOL COMPANION STILL HAS AN ERROR. :)

7. Happy Error Free!

I think it is in the new 8.0 installation program. when I installed it after having it for a year my computer said there were three files that exhisted in my first version 8.0 that the new aol couldn't up grade????? That is when I started getting the error signs.....Had MSN it was worse than AOL...so went back to AOL. Am going to my satellite system next....

Wellllllllll, atleast *I'm* not the only one this is happening to. I even spoke to an online "AOL Tech" and explained the problem. I was told I needed to reinstall AOL. I have done this, and miraculously I *still* get the aol companion error message every time I sign on or reboot. WhoooooHoooooooo doncha' love AOL?
