Win 98 pc refuses to boot - except using emergency Post a Reply
From: aaandy on 12/21/2002
You have an earlier post which exactly decribes what is happening to my pc. Whilst tryinh to install a video card I think I installed the wrong drivers, now: scanreg won't run, scanreg/restore won't work, reinstalling windows - pc refuses to due to problems on the C drive.

Thanks & regards

aaandy

: My PC starts up with System Configuration then Starting Windows 98...
: The next message states that HIMEN.SYS, DBLBUFF.SYS and IFSHLP.SYS are missing or corrupted. It then states "Type the name of the command interepter eg. C:\Windows\Command.com"

FYI: Also check the autoexec.bat file if using Mcafee virus software and remove any lines that pertain to Mcafee.
the issue is that Mcafee is insrtucted to load twice, once through the autoexec.bat then again when windows starts and it can make the PC hang at the start up screen

Were you able to get into safe mode? F8 while the PC is booting will give you some options to try. In safe mode, you could try to uninstall the drivers. You could go to DOS and make sure you have the files the error references. However, I am thinking that you may have to reinstall windows and start from scratch. See if anyone else here has some more hopeful options first.
