OPERATING INTEL PENTIUM II MMX 350/WIN98SE/
BLUE SCREEN APPEARS WITH THE ABOVE-NOTED "SUBJECT"; HAVE TO EITHER RESTART OR MANUALLY SHUT DOWN.
SCREEN HAS BEEN SHOWING HORRID DARK BLUISH/PURPLE/ORANGE COLORS; SOMETIMES COLORS WILL REVERT TO "NORMAL"/FLICKER, etc.
WOULD APPRECIATE A "FIX"
THANX IN ADVANCE,

Good Morning: Have had my monitor checked out; it required inside soldering c/o wires/plugs. BSOD realm has finally expired. Unfortunately, the residual effect appears to be a typeface that is very slightly "blurred". Any suggestions re this?

Thank you for your helpful input.

GOOD MORNING,

THANX FOR YOUR POST.

THERE WERE NO "PROFILES" ON THE LIST U SUGGESTED I CHECK. I REINSTALLED THE SIS DRIVER - NO CHANGE - I REINSTALLED DIREXTX8.1 WHICH WAS SUGGESTED WHEN I REINSTALLED THE NEW DRIVER; HOWEVER, EVERYTIME I TRY TO ACCESS "SYSTEM INFORMATION" I CANNOT GET THRU; I HAVE NO A U D I O NOW!!

FYI: ON START UP THERE IS:

THE USUAL SCREEN INFO
THEN PAUSE
THEN A SCREEN - "INITIALIZE PCI AUDIO" ETC.
HEX = OF
VENDOR ID = 13F6, etc.
A LIST OF OTHER CODES WHICH FLASHED SO QUICKLY I COULD NOT COPY.

THEN ANOTHER PAUSE

THEN THE "NORMAL" SCREEN WITH TASKBAR, ETC. - F I N A L L Y!

AS U SUGGESTED, I BELIEVE THERE MAY BE A PROGRAM CAUSING THESE PROBLEMS AS WELL, BUT OH WHERE TO FIND IT?

THANX FOR YOUR TIME & HAVE A GOOD DAY!

Ok, I think I have what is causing your problem...

A graphics/picture program you have installed is changing your monitor/printer ICC profiles. These are files that calibrate color for all your input and output devices. Reinstalling the graphics driver probably reset the profiles until you started working with the graphics program and it switched them back.

Find out that program, and reinstall it or find out more about the software to disable profile settings.

You can reset Windows to use the standard profiles by right-clicking on an open area of your desktop, choose settings tab, click Advanced button, choose Color Management tab. Remove all profiles on the list.

For troubleshooting, you ca try to reinstall the video card driver again and see if this fixes your problem temporarily. This will help you to determine the source of the problem. The program that you are running at the point that the problem occurs again, will be your culprit.

Hope this helps.

IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO TO STABILIZE THE COLOR ON MY MONITOR? MY PRINTER - EPSON STYLUS 440 IS NOT PRINTING CORRECT COLORS AT ALL. I HAVE REINSTALLED THE DRIVER QUITE A FEW TIMES!!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR PREVIOUS ASSISTANCE - AT LEAST THE MONITOR WAS A "NORMAL" COLOR FOR A WHILE.

I just read over your post again and saw you have 56 mb of RAM?!?!?!? This means you have a 64mb chip installed and your video is using 8mb. You need to get more memory. Most likely PC100 or PC133 type RAM. You can buy 512mb PC133 RAM chip for about 30 or 40 bucks online. I would look into the upgrade.

You have an imbedded graphics card with your motherboard. Also, you have one of the cheapest, least reliable monitors they sell on the market. I would now suspect the monitor has failed. In these days, you can buy yourself a high-end used 17-inch monitor (trinitron CRT) for the same price you spend on this 15-inch monitor. I appologize if you have sincere affections towards your monitor, but I would try a new one first. It is possible that it could be causing some of your problems with the BSOD's but more than likely the cause of your unusual color patterns.

As far as the video driver, here is a direct link to the files. Just choose the file for Windows 98 and download it to your computer.

http://www.sis.com/support/driver/620.htm

It is a big file (9mb) and is zipped so you will need to unzip it. Once you unzip it, open the folder and you will find a file icon with a little computer and disks next to it. The file will be called, 'setup'. Run this and follow instructions to update your video card driver.

I would do both. Get a new monitor (or test with a friends) and update the video card driver. This should fix your problem. If it does not, it is more likely you are having a problem with your motherboard and will need to replace it. However, I would consider just getting a new computer if your motherboard is deemed to be the problem.

There is one more remote possibilty...

RAM

This video card does share your system memory (adjustable up to 8mb) and it may be a case where your system is running low on RAM. How much do you have installed? I would definitely have at least 128mb for your type of computer and operations.

Hope this keeps you busy and fixes your problem. Feel free to post back.

BSOD = Blue Screen Of Death

I need to know the exact model of your video card. If you post it, I will take the time to look it up and give you a link to dowload it and instructions. It is a very simple procedure. If you know that you do not have a GeForce or Matrox video card, then you should be able to figure out what type of video card you have.

If you don't know how to do this, then I would suggest that you find a friendly computer geek that can help you. If none are available, then open your computer and visually take a look at the video card. You can tell which one it is by the monitor cable. If there is no card, then it is in the motherboard. I would need the exact model of your motherboard to help in this situation. Otherwise, you might get enough information by following these instructions:

Right-click on an open area of your desktop
Choose 'properties'
Click on the 'settings' tab

You should see the type of monitor and video card under the picture of your screen. If you give me all that information, then I can help you. This is incidently the same location that you would change screen size/color depth.

Please post back.

THANK U FOR YOUR VERY PROMPT REPLY.

I DO NOT KNOW IF I HAVE A MATROX OR GeFORCE-BASED VIDEO CARD OR THE CURRENT VERSION OF MY VIDEO CARD DRIVER. HOW WOULD I FIND THIS OUT PLEASE?

I HAVE TRIED TO CHANGE SCREEN RESOLUTION/COLOR BIT/GRAPHIC ACCELERATION TO NO AVAIL. FURTHER TO YOUR REPLY, COULD YOU INFORM WHAT THE "BSOD" IS PLEASE?

WOULD IT BE POSSIBLE FOR U TO PROVIDE ME WITH THE EXACT STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS REGARDING UPDATING MY VIDEO CARD DRIVER?

THANX IN ADVANCE,

Welcome to video card problems.

Do you have a Matrox or GeForce based video card? These typically cause this exact memory address error.

You need the current version of your video card driver. You may also try changing screen resolution/color bit/graphic acceleration to a lower setting. Although, you may be getting the BSOD when you try to do this.

Considering your problems with actual screen problems, if the above does not work you will need to consider a new video card.

Hope this helps. At least you know exactly what is causing the error message.

Feel free to post back.
