Excel doesn't start anymore Post a Reply
From: Mark on 08/31/2002
All of a sudden my Excel 2000 (running on Win2K) just stopped working. When I try to open the program, it says that "EXCEL.exe has generated errors", program is shutting down, and an error log is being created. I went so far as to completely removing Office2K and reloading it. All the service packs, etc. are current. Drwtsn32.log says:

Application exception occurred:
App: (pid=1568)
When: 8/31/2002 @ 08:13:35.265
Exception number: c0000005 (access violation)

I've scoured the web looking to see what conflicts might have suddenly cropped up, but nothing so far.

Any help? I'm running it on a ThinkPad T20 w/256MB or RAM.

I do believe that the error is caused by something excel is running, most likely an addin. your can go to start->run and type the following
"c:\program files\microsoft office\office\excel.exe" /safe and it will open fine. But without /safe it won't even start. Then try to figure out which addin did you in. Good luck.

I just had the same problem yesterday and was able to fix the issue without uninstalling any of the office 2000 components or Windows 2000. I located a back door into Excel by going through the following steps.

1. Click on the Start button and then the Run button and locate an Excel file in the C:\ root directory.

2. Click ok.

In my case Excel opened.

3. Go to the Add-Ins and remove all of the selected Add-Ins. The Add-Ins are located in the tools portion of the Excel toolbar.

Make sure that you deselect all of the Add-Ins since I was unable to determine which one caused the problem. I did reload some of the Add-Ins later and Excel continued to operate correctly. One of the Add-Ins became corrupted and would not load, causing the application error.

Good luck, hope this helps.

I deleted Excel.xlb as suggested below and anything to do with excel after a uninstall and reboot to make sure it was all clean, ran that pc-powerscan program from this site and ad-aware and let them fix everything then reinstalled, ran both programs again just to be a sure and all is well!
thanks to whoever posted that suggestion and this site, you are a life saver!

The same error occurs regularly at my work. Uninstall with a deletion of the directory and a registry scrub usually fixes it. BUT NOT ALWAYS. Most of the problems are on nt to 2k upgrades with 97 to 2k upgrades....But some are XP, etc.

I have been having the same issue for about 2 months. With exact same error message. W2K Office2K with all service Pack and updates. Any user can open a the workbook but once they save it they start to get this error. "Excel.exe has generated errors" and same docwatson error as above. I tryed to rename doc. You can click on the doc open new, this will open the doc but once you save you will not be able to open. I found that this issue is some how tied to the printer. I removed all printers and now I can open the document. I have tried different default printers and had the same results. I am still looking for a good solution. I read that some users are setting their default printer as print to file. Not a good solution for me. I think what happen is that the if the printer is offline and you try to open the doc it crashes I have not had a chance to test this theroy yet?

I had the same problem (microsoft word instead of excel). I did a complete re-install of windows 2000 professional, got everything working again, did the SP3 install for windows 2000. Everything still working, installed microsoft security patch 328310 and EVERYTHING BROKE, AGAIN!. I then un-installed the 328310 patch and it is working fine.

SOLUTION:
I had a similar problem to this (along with many other ones), on a computer that was part of an NT4 domain. What I did was add the user logged on to the local accounts of Administrators, Power Users and Guests. It now works; I will gradually cull the permissions to pinpoint where the problem is, but it seemed to be rooted in the lack of permissions. I had to rebuild the workstation TWICE to figure this out - I feel like an idiot! I hope that this helps people with similar problems, though.

Delete the Excel.xlb file. Its the equilvent of the normal.dot file in word. This file saves all customizations for excel and is NOT deleted during a uninstall/reinstall of office. You have to manually delete it then resart excel. You will lose macros and customizations to your tool bars, but its worth it.

The PID is the Application listed below the entry that has the problem. You look for the number and find the application. I am not sure you have the right number. They are usually only three digits.

Also, have you tried to delete the Normal.dot template (I know this is Word, but just try it)?

Also, when you reinstalled Office 2000, did you delete the program directory for office as well? Try that the next time you reload the software.

Do you have any plugins for office/Excel? If so, uninstall them before reinstall.

Try these suggestions first, then post back if they do not work.
