From: David on 03/05/2002
I am getting the following message when attempting to open Word.
"Winword has caused an error in mco9.dll. Winword will now close."
Reinstallation did not help.
Does anyone have a suggestion?

Hi Folks,

I have a solution for you. If after renaming the normal.dot file you are still having problems restart your PC in DOS mode. Assuming you are at the C:\ prompt type in the following minus the " "

"cd windows" then press enter
now you will have the following C:\windows
type in "cd system" and then enter you should now have c:\windows\system

Now type the following without the " "

"rename hpfwin14.dll hpfwin14.old" and then press enter

type "exit" to restart your computer and this will fix your problem, it worked for me.

Good luck send me an e-mail at info@ics-ltd.ie to let me know how you get on.

Hi Folks,

I have the same problem and I am just working on the problem now. Do any of you have a HP printer installed on the PC? Maybe a corrupt printer driver.

Regards,

Brendan

I have the same problem except I get "Winword has caused an error in HPFWIN14.DLL I have looked everywhere to find the Normal Dot and I can't find it specifically named in any of the templates. Where do I find normal.dot? I can find templates but none are named normal.dot. This also seems to affect my printer and now it won't work either. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME before I blow this danged thing up...

There is actually a template filed named normal.dot. Rename or delete this file. Word will create a new one in its place.

: One of my friend is having the same problem. Can you please elaborate how you solved the problem? What do you mean by "deleting the Normal file"?
: Thanks

I was able to find a solution by deleting the Normal file within Microsoft Word. It works fine now.
