WAOL general protection fault in USER.EXE Post a Reply
From: Sarah on 09/16/2002
I'm running Windows 98 SE and every time I try to close a pop-up ad on AOL 7.0, I get the following: WAOL has caused an illegal operation and will be shut down. Details says "WAOL caused a general protection fault in module USER.EXE at 000b:0000lf53". Tried to extract USER.EXE from Windows disk, but there isn't one. Also related to this: User Log-ON screen pops up every time I start Windows and I can't stop it! I've disabled it and deleted all profiles, but as soon as I start comp. back up, IT'S BAAACK!!!!! Help!

Double check and make sure EVERY version of AOL is removed from your system. It sounds like you may have upgraded from a previous version and not removed it. This will cause diffrent versions of WAOL to be stored in diffrent locations on your system. The User.exe portion of the error is telling you that its making a call to the registry. I would remove all versions of AOL from your machine using the AOL unintsaller. Reinstall version 7.0, Uninstall 7.0, Then reinstall it one more time. This will make sure everything is registered in windows. Sounds crazy, but I cant tell you how many times Ive worked on a pc with 5-6 versions of AOL. To get rid of the user logon prompt, do a search for *.pwl and delete all these files. Next time you start windows just leave the password field blank, and it will stop asking you for a password. Good Luck
