I used my desktop which has windows 98 office 2000 and successfully downloaded different types of files onto a compact disc. My laptop has windows xp using word perfect 9. I was able to open all documents on my laptop except for the ms word documents.
The ms word documents automatically converted to rich text docs on my laptop. This is the error message I get.

windows cannot find winword.exe
this program is needed for opening files of rich text documents.
type in the executable file to be used instead.

C:\

ok cancel Browse

My computer skills are not good. I was told just to download ms word
from the web but I'm afraid it might conflict with my word perfect program. I did search this site for a solution, but to be honest, I didn't understand alot of the info. Thanks in advance.

Try installing this patch.Seems to have done the trick here.
I am using Office 97 but there is also a similar patch available for Office 2000

I have noticed the same problem. I think it is some sort of virus. About 10 seconds after i open a Word document. Word closes. No questions asked. It literally disappears.
Not only do you loose your work but the virus deletes the Winword.exe application file.
I have reinstalled Office and the problem reoccours.
The quickest way to get it back is to have a copy of winword.exe stored safely somewhere then copy it back to
C:\Program files\Microsoft Office\Office

Will revert back here if a solution is found....
