From: Colleen on 05/06/2002
When I print to my HP DeskJet 950c printer that is connected with a USB cable, I get the dreaded blue fatal screen that tells me I have an error in MXECPV(02). HP Site is of no help at all. I'm running WINDOWS 98SE. Can anyone help? It happens EVERY time I print.

Yes, I am having the same problem when I disconnect from the Internet. Somebody said this may be due to the Ontrack Utilities program I'm running, but I don't seem to see any results after disabling the AutoCrash protection feature... please e-mail me at solarus@12dollaraccess.com if you have a fix for this.

:
: I alaso have this problem which then causes my PC to crash but it also occurs when I try to close my phone/ internet links. I guessed it was a port error of some sort but I'm an amateur.

: None of the HP suggestions work for me anyway.

:This LONG reply is what I received from HP now. Mine works. Good Luck to you all.

To eliminate the error, try one or more of the following techniques:

Technique 1
-----------
Restart the computer to clear the computer's memory by following the
steps below:

1. Close any open software applications.

2. Select START, SHUT DOWN, SHUT DOWN THE COMPUTER, and select YES.

3. Turn off the computer.

4. Wait several seconds and restart the computer.

5. Try printing again.

Technique 2
-----------
Close all programs that are running in the background by following the
steps below:

1. Select START, and RUN.

2. In the box titled Open, type MSCONFIG, and select OK to display the
SYSTEM CONFIGURATION UTILITY.

3. On the GENERAL TAB, select SELECTIVE STARTUP, and click on the
CHECK next to LOAD STARTUP GROUP ITEMS. This will prevent
programs, in the Windows Startup and Registry, from loading
automatically when Windows starts.

4. On the WIN.INI TAB, click on the PLUS SIGN next to the windows
folder, and click on the check marks for LOAD=, and RUN=.

5. On the SYSTEM.INI TAB, click on the plus sign next to the [Boot]
folder, and locate the COMM.DRV= line. The line should read
COMM.DRV=COMM.DRV. If something different appears to the right
of the equal sign, then click on the check mark for COMM.DRV=.

6. Select APPLY, OK, and choose YES to restart the computer.

7. Try printing again.

Technique 3
-----------
The software application may have a conflict with the Automatic setting
in the printout mode. Change the printout mode in Printer Setup from
AUTOMATIC to MANUAL. With some printer models, it may also be
necessary to select BLACK TEXT or COLOR GRAPHICS.

To change the printout mode, do the following:

1. Select START, SETTINGS, and PRINTERS.

2. Highlight the appropriate printer icon in the Printers window.
Verify that the appropriate HP DeskJet printer is selected as
default by selecting FILE and SET AS DEFAULT.

3. Select FILE, PROPERTIES, and the COLOR TAB. If the COLOR TAB is not
available, select the SETUP TAB. In the COLORSMART selection,
select MANUAL. With some older DeskJet drivers and in some of the
Microsoft (R) DeskJet Universal printer drivers, there may not be a
Manual setting. Instead, select BLACK TEXT or COLOR GRAPHICS in
the Setup screens. Select OK.

4. Close all windows and try printing again.

NOTE: Some fax programs will print only if the
printer is set to the Manual or Black Text
mode. If still unable to print from the fax
program, change the print quality to EconoFast.
Some other programs may require using the
Manual, Black Text, or Color Graphics mode.

Technique 4
-----------
Turn off the Windows 98 Print Spooler by following the steps below.

1. Select START, SETTINGS, and PRINTERS.

2. Highlight the appropriate printer icon in the Printers window.
Select FILE and select PROPERTIES.

3. Select the DETAILS TAB and the SPOOL SETTINGS BUTTON
