Weird crash with multiple windows showing up Post a Reply
From: Tai on 11/11/2005
Hello,

Yesterday I've experienced a very alarming event on my computer : all of a sudden, my firewall Zone Alarm gave me a red notification "Configuration automatique de VPN" (for those who are not familiar with french, "VPN Automatic Configuration"...), and maybe 30 windows appeared in my task bar. These were not internet pop-ups, since the windows were very diverse in nature :

- folders ("Connections tray")
- internet browser Mozilla
- Winamp ("DDE server window")
- Background or other processes ("jauge d'energie", MS_checkwebmonitor", "java sys tray", "igfxtraywindow", "mci command handling window", "GDI+ window")

Some of them had just no name and some could not be closed, so I had to reboot. I looked up a bit on google, but I couldn't manage to get something that looked bad, however it obvisouly is... VPN means Virtual Private Networking, so I don't know, it appeals to my fear of being hacked, maybe exploiting a bug in Java Virtual Machine... But I actually have no clue.
Does anyone already have experienced that, or have an idea of what happened? Do I need to be worried? :/
Thank you.

PS: Since then the problem hasn't reoccured. I'm under xp pro, AVG antivirus and Zone Alarm firewall installed.

Hi,
Experiencing the exact same error. Everything in my task bar clock area takes a form of window, diverse windows with titles ranging from GDI+ Windows, etc.

This occurs randomly once a month or so, so its not really a big problem but just plain annoying.

I'm able to save everything though on most occasions.

Suprisingly don't have a solution till 2014 !!!

This same thing happened to my computer just the other day. I had been away and came back to discover well over 50 mysterious windows open with strange titles, including:
- igfxtrayWindow
- MCI command handling window
- PersistWndName
- ReceiverMessageWindow
and many more, some of which were extremely cryptic. Some did not have titles at all. Several of them were tiny, not much bigger than a short title bar. A few looked like they had something to do with Citrix. Most of them looked like they were spawned from the applications I had running at the time, especially Windows/Internet Explorer, which claimed at least 40 of the windows. I looked at the task manager and saw that sidebar.exe and several instances of iexplore.exe were hogging the CPU. Also, the Start menu was blank.

I closed all of the windows that I could. Some of them could not be closed, so I restarted. The computer booted normally and everything seems to be fine now. As far as I can tell, I didn't lose any data or otherwise suffer any damage.

I did later find out that my wife had tried to setup VPN on my computer, but she did it using her own account, not mine. (Mine was the only administrator account logged on at the time, so maybe that had something to do with it.) I'm chalking it up to some weird, freaky VPN thing that hopefully won't happen again, but doesn't appear to have caused any harm.

I am having this same issue, I was working with Microsoft Access and I pressed ALT+TAB and I got this to happen. It was happening while working with DDE. Does anyone have an answer to this? I have other employees who have the same issue. Please let me know.

Thanks,
Chris

Exactly same problem - XP SP2 with SAV original, It does show a popup once awhile with a Symantec AV is disabled even though it shows as Auto-Enabled. Surprised that a solution for this seems quite difficult to find even after 4 yrs.

I had an identical event today. Every last detail you mention was the same. Also on XP - home edition. Rebooted, updated virus defs, and did a complete system scan, but found nothing. System behavior normal so far... Like you, hoping for some hints about what happened and how to prevent it.

I wish I had an answer to what you went through back in 2005; if anyone reads this I also experienced something just like what was previously posted. The windows that showed up included "mci command handling window" and "Connections Tray" and HiddenFaxWindow (these three part of the same taskbar 'group'); HiddenFaxWindow and WindowsFormsParkingWindow and "GDI+ Window" and ".Net-BroadcastEventWindow" and DragDropComWindow and bitMenuCom (again all from same taskbar 'group'); plus processes like _GD_Crawl (GoogleDesktop?), DVDLauncher, myTAPI, ccApp and many others. Oddly though, the Dell XP Pro box on which these multiple windows opened did not seem to suffer in performance. The CPU drag was minimal, though FYI lots of windows opened with un-named title bars and many had ONLY title bars. Anyone reading this post who recognizes what's going on could reply to mennis@iie.com that would be appreciated.
