From: Carl on 09/27/2002
A friend called and said when they tried unsuccessfully to boot up they received this message:
1720 Hard Drive Detects Imminent Failure.
Does anyone know what this means? And what do you do to fix it?? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

I was told that these problems are a common occurence for these machines and an update should repair the erroneous messages. Do a search on Google for that error message and you will find more info..

This error code applies to the Compaq Deskpro and Prosignia desktop systems to include the following systems: Deskpro 1000, 2000, 2000 MMX, 4000, 4000 MMX, 4000N/S, 6000, 6000MMX, EC, EP, EN, EN Small Form Factor and Net PC's, EN Small Form Factor Front Mounted Audio Solution, Prosignia 300 and Prosignia 320 Desktop systems.

These are higher-end Compaq computers. The bios in this computers are usually designed by/for Compaq. The hard drives have the SMART feature enabled, which will allow for the bios to detect problems with the hard drive.

Well, you know the rest. The hard drive is starting to fail and it will be necessary for your friend to seek another and backup all of his data.

Hope this helps.
