Windows ME Start-Up error, $1m Reward!! Post a Reply
From: Ryan on 06/14/2002
Every time I load my PC up, it gets to the desktop, and then a blue error screen pops up, with the error:

0E:016F:BFF73F51

If anyone has any idea how to remove this error, I will give you a $1m reward and an optional cookie.

If it happens every other time you boot it may be a registry problem.
You have tow registries, one backup and if it doesnt boot right the first time it goes to the back up (that isn't damaged) and everything is OK for that session.
Read about registries, but mostly you need to figure out the diffs between them or copy the good one over the bad one.
Find a good registry checker program first it may do the trick.

OK, upon booting into windows I got the BSoD at 0E 016F BFF73F51.

This was AFTER the login screen but BEFORE windows had fully loaded (I do see the desktop briefly.

It DOES NOT specify a file name, just that address.

Also, for me, it does not happen every time I boot.

Just a little question... do you have a GeForce 2MX video card? I do, and a similar address fault (again not associated with a program) was due to that. i have up dated the drivers and hopefully that is the end of it, but I cannot be certain.

System...

PIII 1GHz
256MB Ram
HDD0 40GB
HDD1 4GB
Creative Soundblaster Live Platinum 5.1
Creative GeForce 2 MX / MX 400 (BIOS 3.11.00.14) (driver 4.14.01.4180)
Netgear FA310TX

Win ME (4.90.3000)
IE6 (6.0.2800.1106)

I would still follow my advice.

You can attempt to rename the file and reboot your computer to see if Windows ME will replace the DLL with the correct version. However, I am not sure you will be successful (about 60% sure it will work). If you are unsuccessful, you can always name the file back to LX32.DLL in DOS to get things back up and running again.

If all else fails, follow the procedure in my last post and you should successfully change it to the ME version.

Ohhhhhhh. LZ32.DLL. I know that one!

I guess I should have made the assumption that was what you were talking about, huh?

Don't follow my previous suggestion. That will only make things more difficult. This file is associated with file compression and copy/paste functions.

You need to extract the dll file from your install CD or CAB files installed on your hard drive. I think extracting the file from your CDROM is the best way to be sure you have the newest version.

To learn how to extract a file, see this website:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;129605

The file must be extracted from the 'Win_12.cab' container (this is the main container file on your install CD that the LZ32.DLL file is stored in and requires the extract tool to get it out).

In addition, I believe this file should be in the 'c:/Windows/System32' folder rather than the 'c:/Windows/System' folder that you mentioned.

I think the version you should have is like 5.0.24 or something like that. You can check the version number by right-clicking, properties, then choosing the version tab.

Hope this all helps. Good luck.

Oh, and by the way...

If you are doing an upgrade from a previous operating system in the future, I would erase your entire drive, repartition/format, then install the new operating system. This is always a safer method and avoids the possibility of conflicting system files from an older operating system.

Wow! I guess I am not as computer smart as I think I am. I do not know of this file or what it does. Therefore, I really cannot offer much advice.

But here is a good suggestion...

It just so happens that Windows ME automatically checks and replaces bad system files. Therefore, I would find the iz32.dll file on your hard drive (search will work) and rename the file, 'iz32.bad'. Then I would restart your computer.

See if this works!

If you look in the Registry, well if you can't get this far.
Try pressing F8 as soon BIOS/POST Finished. You should be able to get a selection to get safe mode, or as soon as you hit the desktop background. Hold your CTRL key down. As this stops any programs loading automatically. If this works, then look in your startup directory under Start Menu - Programs - Startup, may want to remove all, to find out whether thses ones are playing up. Then you can go to the Start Menu - Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Information, Go to tools menu, there should be a Windows Configuration Utility, then go to the startup or type in msconfig at the run command, same program. OR in the registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE goto Software - Microsoft - WIndows - Current Version - Run, also look in Runonce. Also under HKEY_CURRENTUSER Once again Software - Microsoft - WIndows - Current Version - Run and also runonce. But Msconfig should get you out of trouble. If worst comes to worst, if you created a restore point not long ago. You could do a restore if you get into safe mode. Or under safe mode before doing a restore under the System Information under tools, do a Registry Check, amazing in ME this seems to work. Not sure Mircosoft knew ME was going to be doing things like this and actually modifed the Registry Checker to actually work.
I hope this gets you out of trouble.
Worse case scenerio, can always backup data and format c: :-)

Microsoft's gobbly goop will not help anybody living outside of Microsoft's headquarters to lend a helping hand...

Can you be more specific?

Any recent upgrades (harware/software)?

Virus software?

The blue screen will usually give a filename of what has crashed, can you let us know it?

Can you boot into 'safe mode'?

At what point do you get the BLue Screen of Death - do you get to the WinME login screen? Can you get access to your desktop?

All these questions and more...

Be a litte more specific and I would be happy to 'lend you a helping hand'. Otherwise, Microsoft offers support calls for $250 and they can decode your mystery error message. Perhaps if you are offering a '$1m' reward, this will be a drop in the bucket for you. I think Bill Gate's likes cookies...
