backup .dbx files cannot be transferred to new out Post a Reply
From: Dave on 06/14/2002
I had to re-format my hard drive recently. I had saved my .dbx files to another drive. I have tried to copy them into the Outlook Express folder that contains the rest of the .dbx files but when I open Outlook Express the folder is not showing up. I would appreciate any information that you could give me. Thanks!

Randy,
Many thanks for your solution to missing .dbx files.
Renaming the folders.dbx file to folders.old; Thus allowing outlook express to re-create a new folders.dbx file has fixed my problem. Magic!!

Thank you, Randy, thank you! I had been attempting to accomplish just this feat for months and could not get anyone's instructions to work for me. Yours worked for me perfectly! (Well, okay, it took me two tries...) I know this was posted months ago, but thank you again for your suggestion - I was finally able to merge all my emails onto one computer!

WORKAROUND
To import a single .dbx file:
Right-click the Inbox, and then click Properties. Note the folder in which the Inbox.dbx file is stored.
Quit Outlook Express.
Use Microsoft Windows Explorer to copy the .dbx file that you want to import to the folder that you noted in step 1. Make sure that you give the file a unique name that does not conflict with any other .dbx file in that folder.

NOTE: This name becomes the name of the folder in Outlook Express.
In the folder that you noted in step 1, rename the Folders.dbx file to Folders.old.
Start Outlook Express.
In the Folders pane, you see the .dbx file that you copied. You can drag items to their appropriate locations, or rename the folder.

It worked!

I was having the same problem that Tin was having and tried the same solutions. My backup files were fairly large and OE5 would not even recognize it. Here's something to try that worked for me. Find a computer that has Win98, not the second edition cause it uses Outlook Express 5.0. If the computer does not have outlook express it can be installed from a win98 cd using add/remove components. After this is done and you have setup OE4, go to C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook Express\Mail. Delete the *.mbx files that you have backed up (ie..if you backed up inbox.dbx, then delete inbox.mbx). Copy your backed up *.dbx files to this directory. After it has been copied rename the extension from *.dbx to *.mbx and now start OE. If you click on the folders your files should be there. And from there you can foward those messages or back them up as you choose. Hope this helps.

i get similar problem too.
i have many .dbx files and only serverals appear when using express's import function.
I directly move those backup .dbx files into existing express folder, delete "folder.dbx" and restart express again. None of those email appear.
I try to use dbxtract. It point out that the extraction complete successfully. But nothing appear in the output folder.
Anyone could help me?

One more thing...

FYI: Outlook PST files are much more stable than Outlook Express DBX files. In addition, you can archive in Outlook and check the Archived PSTs for missing data.

I am not aware of any others. However, outlook express can alway export email and settings to Outlook. Therefore, if you have Outlook you could do this. In addition, I do not think you can do this with a corrupt DBX file.

Sorry.

Hi,

I hope you can give me a hand.
I have the same problem you are talking about.
I have a 19 Mb .dbx file and using DBXtract I only recovered 2.35 Mb in .eml files.
is there another method to recover all the .eml files in my damaged .dbx?

Thanks

Sergio

Well, I guess I am unsure if you used the import function in Outlook Express. I would try this first before having fun with folders.

It is entirely possible that the files are damaged. There is a utility that you can download that will restore individual emails from a dbx file and put them into a new dbx file. The untility is called dbxtract and you can download it here:

Let me know if either of these solutions were not successful. There may be another option.
