Shellcon Hidden Window Post a Reply
From: Lea on 01/02/2005
Recently, when I try to shut down my XP, I have found that it is very slow to react. On investigation I find there is something running called ShellconHiddenWindow which is delaying my shutdown procedure. Does anyone know what this is? I have no virus and it doesn't turn up as spyware. This is on my laptop - which is very new and has not had problems before...

When the Start Up window pops up click on the startup tab and then un check the box labled MIM.EXE. click appy restart your computer when prompted if not asked to restat do it any way and it will be gone!!!!!!!!!!!! shellcon hidden window is a file extension that runs in the backround when you start your computer. it axcesses the internet to update the program music match ENJOY!!!

Fixwarout completely works, use the above links.
At first there is some pausing after you run it and restart which initially worried me, but everything works now. Thanks for this forum.

Ok what are these for anyways. I go to msconfig, last tab and I see those freaking things there that have been mentionned before:

Nvcpl
ctfmon
nwiz

This has started all of a sudden with no apparent reason, other than a video I downloaded.

Now when I reboot it says that : hidden window, can't close by itself.

Please help me.

I play counter strike also and now my Steam doesn't open even though it runs in the task manager.

Here we go. Hidden window shutdown gone. Run msconfig; go to last tab. It's one of these that needs to be unselected: nwiz, jusched, or nvcpl. Most likely jusched; but the other two are unstable as well.

Yep. I have a "hidden window" too. Not shellcon Hidden Window. Spyware and Macaffe are stumped. This may be the problem to an internet bug which redirects me to different sources from google.com. If you have this "hidden window" type in anything in google.com and see if it directs you to different sites (those which contain nasty nasty viruses).

Hi, Im interested in this "hidden window" on shutdown, I dont have a dell, I have a personal build pc, install windowsXP pro 1 1/2 month ago.

Anyway on shutdown, I get the message ending program "hidden window"
and it is just hidden window, I dont have shellcom, or music match, the only think I installed latly was winrar, and I looked in at remove programs cant find anything out of the ordinary, anyway this can stop me pc from shuting down sometimes, and sometimes windows tells me to end it because it is taking so long, I would like to know what this is and how to rid it. Its only "hidden window" not Shellcon Hidden Window

I have tried to remove MusicMatch Jukebox, it would not let me remove it. I tried going to startup and removed the check in those files. I still have the problem. It looks like MusicMatch Jukebox would give a solution to the problem seeing that I got it from them and it seems that many others have too.

To resolve the ShelllconHiddenWindows problem, without uninstalling Music Math 10, click on Options in MusicMatch, go to Settings and to General. Uncheck both boxes under Permission to communicate with MusicMatch server. This solved the problem for me.

Go to OldVersion.com download and install musicmatch 8. This will solve the problem.

I had this problem on my old laptop and tonight I recieved a shellconhiddenwindow message on my brand new laptop. So i used my free service wich usually costs $99 and called DELL. They walked me through the process of removing it, so here it is and it worked fine for me.
There are two ways, one of wich I found I prefer over their way, since they completely disable the startup menu alltogether. I prefer some items such as my norton internet security, quickset, and other apps to start when i turn my comp on.

Dells way:

Click start button
Click run
Type in MSCONFIG
Click ok
Select SELECTIVE STARTUP
remove the check next to the LOAD STARTUP ITEMS
click APPLY
Close
It will tell you to restart the computer, click restart.

When you restart, use several programs briefly, then shutdown completely and you will see the shellconhiddenwindow doesn't appear any longer. The only problem is when you start your computer, nothing will appear in your startup tray, so if you like your AOL Instant Messenger or any other programs to turn on right away without you having to click on them manually, this will bother you.

I found an easy way to select the programs I want for startup, and leave the ones out I didn't recognize, still the shellconhiddenwindow does not appear. I chose to keep my aim, norton password manager, webshots, net waiting, dell support, and MacAffee aniti virus on my startup menu. No problems since!

Good luck and if all else fails..... they give me this website, wich might help if you know the .exe for files....

Well i did the trying to uncheck the box in start up in msconfig and it doesn't like it....you are prompted to click start up and they are rechecked again if you don't then it doesn't load the things you really want loaded or let you dial up DSL connection....so the answer seems to be uninstall the darn software and go for something else!!!

Well, I read in one post here to unistall everything that had to do with AOL.

I unistalled AOL and the problem with SHELLCON HIDDEN WINDOW has disappeared. The only problem I continue to have is the need to reboot before I can access the Internet. Perhaps, I should unistall MMJB also, since I don't use it and see what happens then.

If I find success, I will come back here and let everyone know.

(a slight digression): I don't trust AOL ... NEVER DID.

I don't trust Internet Explorer and Netscape is not much better, as far as privacy is concerned. That is why I use Firefox. Beautiful. Easy to use. And I am not reading about a "new venerability" and patch every week.

I remember reading about how to make hidden files visible and deleting them in Internet Explorer and Netscape. When I did that, there must have been a ton of megabytes in those former hidden files of every thing I did on my computer and every site I had been to, since I had it. And deleting those files was much more involved than just going to My Computer > tools > folder options and clicking or unclicking "making hidden files visible". But then again that was an order operating system than the XP I am using now ... just my 2 cents.

There is this man across the street and he told my sister at her work which she works at a restraunt and he stopped to eat, he told her that he had a device that he could get into other peoples computer and stuff. He asked her if we had cable or dial up and she said dial up not thinking then he told her about the device on the computer. I am thinking that it might be him and some other people doing this!!

Music Match 10 is the problem, and to date (03-19-06) I know of no solution to fix this application issue. In the end I removed MMJB very thoroughly which includes XP's registry. I have an idea that the artwork (.m3u) is somehow the culprit, but I can't be sure. If they are smart, Dell will dump Music Match Jukebox.

The 'Msconfig' will remove the MM files from your startup menu, BUT that is all.

Once you open and run MM, do a Ctrl+Alt+Delete and look at the processes that are running. You will see the "mim.exe" in addition to a few others. Also check your CPU usage. If it is high while MM is running, that will continue until you close it. That is why many users are complaining of slow speed......MM is using all of your system resources.

After you close MM, check to see if any MM processes are still running (they usually are) and kill them manually.

This is a terribly buggy program!

Start, Run then type msconfig.

Go to Startup tab. Uncheck any boxes associated with Musicmatch.

Next time you boot, you'll get a message window saying you've changed configuration, do you want to go back to normal operation, or something aling those lines.

Look for the box that says don't showthis message again (or something similar) and chck it. Then proceed to finish booting your PC.

FYI: While this appears to be a known issue with MM Version 10 and Windows XP, Musicmatch Technical Support does not seem to have a clue.

When I first report the Shellcon Hidden Window error and 99%CPU usage (hence, the slow computer problem), they told me to send them a diagnostic log. A few days later, I got a response telling me to completely un-install the program and re-install using the link they sent me. That didn't work.........same problem. I reported that to them immediately.

My next response was the same: completely un-install and re-install MM10. I thanked them for their timely response, but informed them that I had already done that and had no luck.

Today I received another e-mail from their "tech-weenie of the moment": Send a new diagnostic log file

I responded once again that we appear to be going in circles and I am getting nowhere.

Here is my latest solution: I'm switching to i-Tunes.

If anyone has better luck, I'd love to hear about it :)

I have this problem on my new Dell Computer, I have installed music match juke box, I know why it comes up now. I have done a bit of research on "ShelllconHiddenWindow" and found out that a "Hidden Window" opperates everytime you turn your computer on, it copies itself and sends it where ever, and it is typically known as a "worm" which is very dangerous to your computer, since it can destroy your computer. The Website where I got my info. from is www.comcast.com, I still have not gotten rid of this very annoying "thing".

I had this problem last week the first time after I downloaded Musicmatch 10. I noticed that Musicmatch was now showing up in my Start menu. When I right clicked on it, there were options for Quick Play. I checked thru Musicmatch's Settings (under Options, Settings) and found under Music Library, Player an option "Quick Play in the System Tray". I disabled this option by unticking it. Since then I haven't had the problem again. Try it out.

I had the same problem and it was slowing my computer way down also. All I had to do was go to Start, Run, type MSCONFIG and then hit Enter. Select the last tab to the right, then uncheck MIM.EXE. and restart your computer and NO MO HIDDEN WINDOW!!!! It realy does work!!!! And you dont have to get rid of Music Match. It just disables Music Match from accessing the internet and that is what put the Hidden Window on your computer.

THE BEST THING TO GET RID OF THIS CRAP IS TO UNINSTALL M.M.J. AND GO TO YOUR CONTROL PANEL AND SET UP A RESTORE DATE TO BEFORE YOU INSTALLED M.M.J., GIVE IT A TRY, IT WORKED FOR ME.

I started to have this problem as soon as i upgraded to MM10. It also started to freeze my desktop. I had to uninstall MM and reinstall. That was a few days ago so more is to be reveiled. But i already see shellcon hidden window appear so I tried changing in startup registry. See what happens. Very disappointed in results trying to contact musicmatch.

the upsell download etc error msg for mmjb occurs quite frequently
especially when my laptop is not directly connected to www but via proxy server. so it is something wrong in mmjb, there are no settings to make to avoid this problem, at least not in mmjb10 and earlier.
at home when i connect directly to www without proxy server I do notsee this msg.

this is another thing that the ppl at mm have not responded or reacted to yet...

Has anyone had problems with an error stating that it "Could not download from upsell channel" upon opening musicmatch? I uncheched the automatic updates, but it is still happening. Also mmdiag.exe is tends to lock up while shutting down the pc.

Thanks

i also get the shellcon msg fairly frequently on shutdown of winxp5sp2.
however i do not use mmjb every time and still get this problem.
under start/run/msconfig/startup i found two items that i didn´t fell was very important:
realsched and mimboot, the earlier is something for the realplayer the second is for mmjb. i unchecked them both. clicked ok.
on restart i got a note on selective something. i clicked ok.
mmjb got an error something. just typed to mm that is was like that, deal with it. win also reacted and sent error msg. on 2nd restart of both pc and mm everything seems to be ok. no more msgs and shellcon on shutdown. wish me luck...

overall, the number of things that start during startup should be as low as possible. it just drains your pc for no good reason at all...

Hi,
I feel a bit better knowing other people have the same problem.

I get the Shell con hidden window message, searched the net and it led me here. Seems like there is no agreed root cause for this issue. Seems agreed it occurs on XP O/S, usually with Music Match V10 users.

I have had MM for a few years, and version 10 for a fair while, and it has been running perfectly, till I upgraded my internet connection to DSL, and installed a new modem. I will research the issue before deleting any files from my system.

I think MM is great to use, and have been really impressed to date with its functionality and ease of use. I was pissed of to read that they only take tech queries from users who purchased with in 12 months, and equally pissed that I couldnt find any appropriate forum to lodge a request/notification/statement/anything on their site.

Anyway, anyone who has any useful info on this, feel free to email me at itsokdesu(at)hotmaildotcom. If i come up with anything i will post it back here.

Cheers!

I came upon the same problem when I upgraded to MusicMatch 10. Before the upgrade, I don't recall this problem ever happening. I simply uninstalled the MusicMatch program. I also deleted the program folder in the [Program Files] on my HD that the uninstaller did not delete. My computer did not have the shellcon problem ever since. Other solutions have been posted in the earlier replies.

Shellcon Hidden window is back up software that is attached to certain programs, musicmatch being one of them. I am still researching the effects on computer efficiency. It slows down the shut down procedures because it is turning off. It runs in the background when you turn on your computer. I have a new laptop also and it never appeared until I downloaded the newest version of musicmatch.

I have this as well. This looks as though this has been going on for 6 months or so. If this truely is a virus I find it hard to believe that Norton and McAffee have not listed it yet. Music Match posted back in January that they were aware of the issue and could not find a solution? This is begining to be BS and someone needs to come up with a real solution.

After deleating MusicMatch, and still having shellcon problems, I went looking in programs. There was still 1 file, MusicMatch Licence and I deleated that and havent had the problem since, about a week. I notified MusicMatch of the problem and got a responce telling me to look for viruses, but have seen the other reponces from MusicMatch to other people. I think Yahoo has put some sort of spyware, Shellcon, in MusicMatch. My best advise, deleat MusicMatch, look for the hidden file that is not deleated, deleat it, and get WinAmp. I havent seen any problems with it.

I'm going to try what you all have suggested, because I too! have this bogus "hidden shell" at shutdown. I too, use Music MatchBox, and purchased the unlimited updates about 3 years ago, so it seems to ask to update constantly!
So, does this sound familiar to anyone?----Before yesterday, (when I updated, again v.10) the last update required my MusicMatchBox to reload all my music files, which did a computer search, & even screwed up my "libraries" (which besides the default, I also had a Christmas library). So now it seems that I cannot create that second library, so Xmas music is mixed in with the default library. (I probably should just delete the Christmas stuff anyways)

After that update, MMB began shutting down when I would try to rename songs or genres, and the hidden shell began showing up.
And now, with this last update, I just purchased a new CD, and went to record it in my files on the computer, and it kept showing me updates for the recorder, encouraging me to upgrade to MMB Plus. Then, when it directed me to the website, I clicked on the unlimited updates link, and downloaded again, and it told me that their were no new updates to load.
Very frustrating!!! Is anyone else inclined to not update MMB anymore, and cancel out that darn pop up window each time you open the program???

Hi all, I too have experienced the "shellcon hidden window" problem for the past month and I have tried some of the fixes that have been posted on this board, to no avail. I have also been in contact with MusicMatch and finally I got somebody's attention; I wouldn't say this is a perfect answer, but at least they are now aware of the problem. The best thing to do at this point is send MM Jukebox technical support a complaining e-mail. Here's what they say:

>>>Thank you for contacting Musicmatch Support.

The behavior you are experiencing is a recently discovered issue with the current version of Musicmatch Jukebox. We currently have an open issue in our defect tracking system and the issue is under investigation by our Product Development team.

All issues are prioritized based on a number of factors including issue severity and number of customers affected.

Please let us know if you experiencing additional issues with Musicmatch Jukebox.<<<

I have had the problem now for a couple of weeks. I'm running XP Pro with SP2. I also have Nero 6 and MusicMatch. I think I upgraded both of them a couple of weeks ago, so either could have caused this nasty problem!

I will be pissed when i find out which culpret introduced this problem and I'll let them know about. I would suggest that everyone put some kind of complaint on the web anywhere to get maximum exposure to this problem.

Andy's solution will work. The problem is caused my MusicMatch v 10. There is file mim.exe that causes the problem. I just deleted MM and the problem is solved. If I use it again will delete the start up files.

Any idea where the XML file is from or what actually causes the problem? I have used Musicmatch for at least three years without any problems, and now all of a sudden it seems to be linked to this error -- why? I had to delete MMJB entirely and now I can't even reinstall it, which is all very strange. It would be nice to know where this problem originates so that I can avoid it from happening again.

I've had the same problem with the shellconhiddenwindow and my computer running slow as molasses. I found the following post on another forum and tried it, and it worked great. I no longer have the hiddenwindow message, and my computer seems faster. Here it is:

----------------

Have you recently installed MusicMatch Jukebox? If so, go to Start>Run and
key in:
msconfig
Click on OK or hit ENTER

Click on the Startup tab and click in the checkbox (to clear the checkmark)
beside any and all entries relating to MusicMatch. Click on Apply then OK.

When you next restart your computer, MusicMatch won't load and run in the
background at startup (which is not necessary to have it do.......you can
simply open the program manually when you want to use it), and that should
solve the ShellIconHiddenWindow message at shutdown.

-------------------------------

Hope it works for everyone with this problem.

Hi Folks, I have been plagued today by this same phenomenon. I ran a search of my computer, including the hidden files, and came up with this file as the problem:

VLBR.XML

I not only deleted it, but shredded it with a utility that makes files unreadable and unrecoverable. It immediately solved the problem. Hope that this helps.

Same thing. I had also installed ActiveSync, but had installed a few other things as well so I can't be entirely certain what caused it. The most annoying thing is that XP now thinks I have a third DVD drive -- I don't -- which caused my second hard drive to be re-designated as G: instead of F:, which seems to be responsible for causing a complete meltdown of Musicmatch and some games that were on the second hard drive.

Same problem. I have tried E.D.'s solution but my search yielded no files containing the words 'shellcon' nor 'hidden'. I am getting a little concerned as this appears to be a Russian program and although it is certainly unfair of me to stereotype, the country is a great source of internet piracy.

I have the same issue. I found this on the web on a download site.

"ShellCon may be used for converting any data from one format to another. When you are using a different software, you very often have a problem with converting from one file format to other file format. Usually such converting you make by using small utilities. An interface of such utilities are similar. Users select files and select a destination folder for result. Sometime users set a spatial options for converters. We have developed a shell for converters (ShellCon). The ShellCon can help users and developers: For users the ShellCon are common shell for converters. Users will have one program with one interface for a lot of converters. For developers the ShellCon are a tool for fast creating converters. A developer don't need to create a shell and interface for user. A developer make a force for creating converter. Developer will create a converter as dll and put it to the ShellCon folder. ShareWare version can add only one converter."

Do a Search, making sure that Hidden Files are included. Delete the shellcon hidden files.
Go to: Search-More Advanced Options-Search Hidden Files and check.
Could be more than one result-I deleted all that included shellcon and hidden.
Good luck,
