Dell Dimension 4100 Freezes up Post a Reply
From: Chris on 08/06/2004
My friend has a Dell Dimension 4100 with Windows 98. It was responding very slowly, with no new applications being added and minimal usage. Performance (which SBC DSL Tech reconnized) was at 40%. He made changes and then 82%, which didn't last long after hanging up.

I thought increasing RAM from 128 MB to 512 MB and upgrading from Windows 98 to Windows XP. No such luck. After loading... and the desktop would come up... within a couple of minutes it would FREEZE. I would have to turn the system off... since CTRL/ALT/DEL would not respond. Then reboot... and same thing all over again.

Also there was no updated virus scan loaded. Before the RAM and XP updates I did attempt to download a Trial NORTON, however, it would never complete the SCAN cycle.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be the problem and/or solution?
