Please help! Computer Keeps Restarting -- Cant Fix Post a Reply
From: Daniel on 03/25/2004
The strangest thing started happening to my computer. It worked perfectly for about 2 years now, and all of the sudden, it just started restarting. It only restarts after I have entered the desktop (it wont restart at the login screen) and it also only restarts after I go idle for about 5-7 minutes. I have windows ME and have tried everything to fix it. Only error that Windows has ever given me is stack paages, which I fixed. I thought it was a power issue, so I plugged my computer into a more reliable source, and it seemed to work at first, but now its not. Is there anything I need to do power wise? Do I need to take it in to get checked, or is it just the power source that is the problem? Is there anything I can do to rise the ammount of voltages sent in? the fans work fine, the temp is usually normal around 35-40. What should I do to fix this problem? I dont know what under clocking is, so if anyone can tell me how to do that if it will fix it, Ill try it. Someone please tell me what to do.

Dan,

I have seen the same problem on two occasions:

The first time, it was the screen saver. Turn it off and it is fine. Make sure to shut of the energy saver that turns the monitor off as well.

Second time, it was a power problem. Friend lived across the street from a grain elevator in a bodunk town. When they fired up the electric motors for the dryers, it would restart the MB. eventually fried it.

Hope this helps,

-T

If it can sit on the Login page perpetually, it is probably something in the Startup file. In Windows ME (Missing Everything) the simplest way to fix this is the following:
While the PC is powering up keep tapping the F8 key
This will get you your boot options
use the arrow keys on the keyboard to select Safe Mode
press Enter
If PC boots into Safe mode without restarting, now you disable your startup files
Click Start
Click Run
type MSCONFIG
Click OK
On the General Tab here put the dot next to Selective Startup
(if it is already selected go to the Startup tab and write down what ones are checked and what ones aren't)
Once you know what was checked and what wasn't, uncheck them ALL
Keep in mind this will stop all other applications from loading
Click Apply
Click OK
you wil be forced to restart
when it restarts let it reboot as normal
Login when prompted, and see if it reboots again
if it doesn't do it's little reboot trick the problem was in one of those startup files.
To prove which one, simply run MSCONFIG again, and check HALF of what was checked originally, than apply and restart again.
If problem is back, uncheck them until the problem is gone again. it is a major pain, but the best way to solve it.
If unchecking all of these does nothing or if it still restarts in Safe Mode, the problem is virus or operating system related.

Your problem sounds like it is most likely a power settings problem. It sounds like either your computer is set to hibernate/standby/shutdown after 5 minutes, or your BIOS has a settings like that. It could also potentially be a virus.
