 Msinfo32.exe not working - won't display sys i Post a Reply
From: Amy on 03/23/2004
I was looking at the system information tool and on the right side it says, "The component which displays this information is not functioning properly, or is not present on this machine."

It also crashes with the following error messages:

C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\MICROSOFT SHARED\MSINFO\MSINFO32.EXE caused an "Access Violation" fault in module MSINFO32.EXE
at 0167:0040639B.

and

C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\MICROSOFT SHARED\MSINFO\MSINFO32.EXE caused an "Access Violation" fault in module MFC40.DLL
at 0167:7B9812B6.
(when trying to export the info to a file)

sfc.exe didn't fix anything.

I don't run Intellipoint software--which I know causes msinfo probs.

Any way to repair or reinstall whatever's missing?

Got the answer from somewhere else, so I'll post it here for future reference....

You need Msinfo32.exe in the Windows folder and Msinfo.inf in the
C:\WINDOWS\INF folder. if you enter Msinfo32 from Start > Run and
you are missing a display try this:
The following worked for me, credit to mbowdoin.
Copy/paste each line one at a time.
I put an * in each command where there is a space, remove the * and
insert a space before running them. 4 in each line. Paste them into
notepad to remove the * asterisks then copy/paste.
You may need to put in the W98 CD.
Then, run the following 4 commands in the Start/run box (each item
should be entered as one RUN command):
The 4 lines may wrap so get it all.
rundll.exe*setupx.dll,InstallHinfSection*Msinfo.reg*64*C:\WINDOWS\INF\msinfo.inf
rundll.exe*setupx.dll,InstallHinfSection*Msinfo2.reg*64*C:\WINDOWS\INF\msinfo.inf
rundll.exe*setupx.dll,InstallHinfSection*CDM.base*64*C:\WINDOWS\INF\msinfo.inf
rundll.exe*setupx.dll,InstallHinfSection*Sigver.Base*64*C:\WINDOWS\INF\msinfo.inf

Reboot then try Msinfo32 from Start > Run
If no help you may need to extract new Msinfo32.exe and Msinfo.inf
files. One or both may be corrupt. Then run the commands.

---------------------------------------

It worked perfectly. My msinfo32.exe file hadn't been corrupted. Extracting it from the CD wasn't a fix. Msinfo.inf is not on the CD to extract. My msinfo.ini file is totally blank (before and after the fix).. don't know what that means.
