Removing the Read-Only Designation Post a Reply
From: Cindy on 03/17/2004
Windows 98, Word 2000. Gateway EV700. I recently had problems with Word and it turned out to the the Normal.dot thing I've heard about before. This morning I tried to save some documents to a disk and got the message that they're all marked "Read-Only." I didn't mark them that way (at least not on purpose). I can save changes when I'm working in Word but can't save to the disk.

Help!!

Mick, FYI Cindy indicates that she can save to floppies and that the read only attribute is not checked. This is an error generated by attempting to WRITE to read-only MEDIA. Yes, the error message says it is the files are read-only but this is a typical Microsoft oversight.

When you save a document to a CD. The document automatically becomes a read only document because you cannot change a CD document other than by saving it to a floppy or hard disk, then altering it and then re-burning it. If you drag the document into say your 'my documents' folder from your cd drive, then right click it, go to properties and uncheck the read only box you should be able to then read it and alter it in Word.

You don't say how you are attempting to save the documents to a CD. Can you save any other files to the CD, or is it just Word documents that causes this problem? What program are you using to write to the CD? In win98 you just can't copy to CD-R (recordable), it must be CD-RW (rewriteable) and you must use your CD writing software to format the CD-RW first. To copy to CD-R you must use your CD writing software. The error message you are getting is one that windows will frequently use when it sees read-only media in the target drive - I know, the error message gives the impression that the FILE is read only, but that's the way it works.

Alas, that Read Only block is NOT checked on my document - nor on another dozen documents I tried at random. Yet I can't copy any of them because I always get that same "RO" message. Here's another twist I discovered this morning. I was able to copy the document to a floppy, so it must be something related to the CD. Goodness, isn't electronics interesting!! GRRRRR.

Right click on your document and uncheck the box that says read only.
You must have that setting somewhere in your options in Word - it can probably be changed there. However, if you do not want to make the change permanently, just do the right click thing.

Hope this helps
