C & C Generals Zero Hour freeze problem Post a Reply
From: paul on 09/30/2003
Please i need someone to give us some advice, i ran the old generals without many problems but when im playing Zero Hour the game will freeze but the music will continue, i've updated drivers and tried as many things as i could but to no avail, the problem seems less when i turn every graphic setting down but it still happens every few mins, my computer is win 98, amd duran 1.3gh, radeon 9000 128mb and about 300mb ram.....
someone please give us a hand cos i have to save the game every 5 mins and it looks crap aswell.
one more thing is that the computer when starting it say that a ntdll.dll file is missing but i've checked and it there in the systems folder, would that be the cause...
PLease help cos i'm at a loss...........

thanks

Not a driver problem, but a dual problem. The main problem is DirctX 9. Once installed all my games acted the same as mentioned above. Tried them on the same computer after reïnstalling DirectX 8.1, reïnstalled the game and all was well again. Most older games (unfortunately 1 yr. is old) don't communicate with DX 9.
A well known issue, but no game manufacturer seems to be able to find a patch. Instead, they deny.....

I finally figured it out. I have an ATI card and I needed new drivers. That fixed it! Just a regular download from http://www.ati.com

I've tried just about everything, searched the Web jsut about everywhere, and I can't figure out why this is happening. I've got a brand new PC and you would think if Zero Hour worked on any computer, it would work here.

Quick poll: I'm running Windows XP Media Edition (HP Media Center m470n). I'm wondering if that has something to do with it. Is anyone else running Windows XP Media Edition?

For you guys using the newest nvidia drivers. Right click desktop > properties > settings > advanced > tab of your card....mine is geforce4 ti 440 > In box on left under click d3d settings >

Now once in this window change detail level to best performance. My comp worked great like that for a while. (through usa and gla campaign) but now its doing it in the chinese first level. When i use my big ass tank to attack the truck after killing the two tanks to the east. Happend twice there. But try that.

I HAVE A SOLUTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My game was also locking up after the splash screeen so I tried everything listed below and it didnt work so...

For some reason out of desperation I deleted the Zero Hour Data folder in My Documents, as a last resort to reinstalling the game.

The game now runs perfectly!!!!!!!!!!!

WOOOOHOOOOOOOOO

no its not an ATI thing because I have a geforce fx5600 ultra and does the same thing.

I turned hardware acceleration of gfx card down a notch and the game didnt lock up anymore, but my mouse pointer blinks.

Im completely baffled too :-S.

IT AIN'T HAPPENIN'!!!! ZERO HOUR WILL NOT RUN ON MY HIGH END PC AT ALL!!!!!!!!!
ABOUT 5 TO 10 MINUTES INTO THE GAME IT WILL COME TO A COMPLETE FREEZE!!! WHAT THE F*** IS THIS?! I'm a PCGamer and I have a bunch of other games that use much more power than this game and it ain't happenin' with this one.
I read up on the forums and took all advice to consideration. I did everything from update vid and mobo drivers to reformatting to patching the game as well!!! Still nothing..... Here are my specs:

P4 2.4ghz 800fsb
Soyo Dragon2 Motherboard w/Dual channel mem and 800fsb ready
1 gig Kingston HyperX Memory Dual channel enabled
40 gig Western Digital Hard Drive
8x ATI Radeon 9600 Pro

I'm at a loss guys and about my previous comment....Unreal Tournament 2003 Runs Beautifully at 1024x768 at highest settings! Its a damn shame because ZERO HOUR is an incredible game especially if you're an RTS fan. SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP !!!! White Flag has been raised!!!

- XTREME PCGAMER - J-MAN........ THANX

Same thing happens to me too. The computer freezes at random times whilst playing Zero hour. I am using radeon 9600 pro. i think it is an ATI problem.

This happens to me too....does'nt crash the PC but the game slows right down and almost stops then speeds up a bit and constantly does this back and forth. Original Generals runs perfect on max settings at 1600x1200 so its not my PC (XP2100+, 9600Pro, 512MB Ram etc) does same thing on my other PC (P4 2.8Ghz, 1GB RAM, Matrox Parhelia) so its not specific to ATI chipsets either. If anyone has a clue please let me know....Ive looked everywhere with no joy.

Same problem and very annoying. I've got a 9800 pro 256Mb. Have updated the video drivers and mobo sound drivers but still freezing after a seemingly random amount of time. Have disabled virus checker and firewall - same problem. Haven't had this problem with any other software since building the machine.

On two occasions the freeze has resulted in XP blue screen of death on reboot and have had to go back to earlier restore points to get XP working again which has taken several attempts on each occasion.

Maybe a game patch will help but haven't seen one yet?

I'm having this too, wonder why this is ... the cursor even stays animated, so it's not a driver thing I guess
