 WinME + NVidia + 1GB RAM = msgsrv32 hangs Post a Reply
From: Jason on 07/16/2003
Symptoms: A functional Me system with 768MB RAM and GeForce4. Bring it up to 1GB, and at a random point in the startup process it will hang, with CTRL-ALT-DELETE showing "msgsrv32 [not responding]". Safe mode will work, and after switching to the MS VGA drivers the machine will boot normally. Going back to 768 will also fix it.

Google turned up no shortage of reports of this problem across a range of motherboards and video cards, and some advice that older versions of the Detonator drivers are functional, but I had no luck going as far back as Nvidia keeps available. Even if that did work, I wouldn't consider it acceptable, but I can't find any other suggested workarounds. Nor even a description of where the problem lies, although I'm leaning towards Microsoft at the moment (I've seen several issues with >512MB RAM in 9x systems, but nothing like this and nothing really recent). Anyone have any suggestions?

I have exactly the same problem. I have a 3Ghz P4 + Geforce FX 5900, and the option to boot to XP/98/DOS. After upgrading to 1GB RAM, WinXP works better, but Win98 freezes all the time. I uninstalled Win98 Detonator-drivers and now use standart SVGA drivers. The graphics is ugly, but no more freezes :-)

Anybody have a better solution? Except of getting rid of 'stinkin' Win98 :-)

WinXP is far better, but with Win98, incl. native DOS, lots of things STILL runs better (and games/apps in DOS-windows have a much better sound.) Btw. A Win98 installed 'Norton Disk Doctor' (+ Speed Disk) works better with Fat/Fat32 drives!

In windows ME,98,95 the maximum supported ram is 512mb, I tried more than that in win98 and my videocard drivers weren't working, there is no fix to have more ram in those operating systems which stinks.
