Windows won't open, Himem system is missing. Post a Reply
From: Robin on 07/04/2003
I started System file checker to check my system because I just updated Internet Explorer to IE6. System file checker said to restore user.exe, so I did. After that I found that Display wouldn’t open from the control panel. So I restarted my computer to see if that would fix it but the computer booted to the start up menu with safe mode highlighted. When I pressed enter, the computer restarts and goes to scandisk and then back to the startup menu and back again to scandisk and back and forth. I did try step by step configuration, and got through to where I could type in the command prompt “Win [/D;[S}” and continued to come up with “Himem system is missing. Make sure file is in Windows directory”.

Hi,

Boot in DOS and copy the himem.sys from the windows 98 CD. I'm not sure if u can straight away copy the file though. Just do a dir command to search on the CD. If it is there, copy himem.sys to c:\windows

The syntaxt would be:
CDROM:\copy himem.sys c:\windows
