I had the same problem, and fixed it by removing the Cloudmark Desktop spam filtering software, a similar fix previous solutions.

I was able to fix this for a customer, but this may not apply to all

The customer had removed norton antivirus but norton left a registry key for an antispam plugin behind, after removing the key the error no longer poped up unpon launch of outlook.

look for add-ins that don't belong in the registry under HKCU/Software/Microsoft/Office/Outlook/Add-ins

Also a reinstall of office did not remove this key. I also tried a tool from microsoft that was supposed to remove all the reg keys for office but it didnt work either.

Hi,

When I open outlook,Iam getting the error "OUTLOOK.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created". I tried opening it using \safe command but that didnt help. Login window popped up, when i entered my login details and clicked on OK, after some time I got the same error.

Uninstall Office 2000, go to start, run, type regedit and hit OK. go under HKET_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/OFFICE. Delete the entire OFFICE Directory. Reboot, and reinstall Office 2K.

I had this same problem after installing Outlook Professional 2000 on my new Dell Computer running Win2k. I had also installed a program called Espam which is a spam eliminator program. There were a couple of other software programs too. I uninstalled everything I had put on and then reinstalled Outlook Professional 2000. I found Outlook worked fine. I then began reinstalling my other software and check Outlook each time. Everything was fine until I installed Espam (which was the last program) and I got the message. I uninstalled Espam and so far Outlook is fine.

If you have Espam or another program like it, try taking it off.

Outlook won't open when my computer is connected to the interne. When the computer is NOT connected to the internet, it will open and stay open for about two minutes afterwhich the error pops up and Outlook closes. I've printed out all previous replies posted here and have attempted all solutions except for the one posted by Charles in August.

How does one re-name a file's Type [extension] in Explorer ["search for Extend.dat and rename the file to Extend.old"]?

I created a New Profile but when I click Outlook | Mail Services, "Always use this profile" is not an option [unless I'm being blind].

Until I can get beyond these two steps to the solution posted by Charles, the rest of the steps are moot.

Lastly, is there another mail program [not Yahoo] that is on par with Outlook as far as file folder organization, and editing ability? If so, will these other mail programs convert pst files?

Thank you!!

Jeffman hit my problem right on the head. Who would have thought to check there. Better yet why did this setting ever change?

FYI - If your getting this error message when you try to compose a new message. Check your message format settings. I went through all the above microsoft fixes and reinstalls to no avail then noticed that my message format settings where blank Tools->Options->Mail Format->Send in this Message Format - Mine was blank. After selecting HTML everything seemed fine.

Hello,

I have tried the MS fixes and they did not help. I have also tried deleting the mail profile and also reinstalling the software. This all to no avail. This also happens when the users click on anything in the outlook toolbar, such as reply or forward. Any other ideas would be helpful

I found out that this problem was caused by a corrupt network printer within the network. Outlook crashed when i tried to print out an e-mail. Word, Excel etc. crashed upon launching.

After i removed the corrupt printer and installed a second printer as the default printer all problems were solved.

Because it's a general office error it is most likely that there can be various causes to this problem.

With kind regards,

Patrick.

This just happened to me today and I have a fix for this. Might not want to due it this way but it works.

We are running Win2k in a domain enviorment. When I login (domain admin) or any other user logs in, outlook works fine. But when the one specific user logs in the outlook.exe error is generated. Saved the users exchange mailbox to a pst file and backup her documents that were saved locally and went ahead and deleted her profile from the desktop, this way when she logs back into the PC, she will look like a new user to it. Once she logged back in, a new profile was created for her on the PC and I setup her exchange account i noutlook and imported her PST file and she was back in business.

Hope this helps, email if this works for you: workshop777@yahoo.com

I have the same problem - but maybe not the same cause. On some Windows 2000 (SP$) machines here at our high school, Outlook 2000 (SP#) either freezes at startup (endless hourglass) or I get the Outlook.exe crash and errors message. We are running Outlook with Internet Email (not exchange server). I have gone through the Microsoft Tip that someone posted here, but I have two (maybe one) other problem. When I click on the Mail Icon in Control Panel, nothing happens. When I open Outlook and click on Tools-Accounts nothing happens. I am unable to access my Internet Email account settings. I have read extensively on the Microsoft Support site, and nothing there looks like my problem. Any ideas? Thanks, jranta@sprise.com

For "Ram" == Could be a hardware problem since it is still a problem with a clean install. If you haven't upgraded your office programs it may be a problem with old software, and you know how MS likes to get more $$ from you.
Why not try Open Office?

STOP USING OUTLOOK FOR MAIL!! And yes, I am yelling that!
It's the worse thing you can run, it is the reason all these viruses are getting out there, STOP USING IT!
Go download Mozilla or Eudora and use that for mail, if you don't get much mail then use Yahoo, it also scans attachments for you so it's real hard to get a virus, plus it gets rid of a lot of SPAM.

The error message has now extended to all office programs!!

I just reformatted my hard drives including any and all DOS partitions and reinstalled windows 2000 and Office 2000.

IT GENERATED THE SAME ERRORS!!!

I doubt therefore that such errors could be virus related, but what the heck are they then? Makes no sense to me!

My problem was related to the installation of Adobe Acrobat 6 Pro. I think something to do with the macros it installs for Office products. As soon as i uninstalled it, the errors stopped.

I had this same problem.......it only occured when i clicked on an email that had no text in the subject line.

I just fixed it.......it was Mccaffee Virus Scan.
Go into Mccaffee virus scan, "pick a task", "change my virusscan settings","configure Vshield background settings", and i unchecked
email scanning and Hawk for outlook.

this fixed my problem......

I had the same problem when I starup Outlook. I found the following Ms KB article to be very useful and potentially fix the issue:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;297010
---------------------------------------
OL2000: Error Message: OUTLOOK.exe Has Generated Errors and Will Be Closed by Windows
The information in this article applies to:
Microsoft Outlook 2000

This article was previously published under Q297010
SYMPTOMS
After you are logged in to Outlook 2000 for a short period of time, the following error message may appear:

OUTLOOK.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if information in the user profile, personal folder, or information services is corrupted. This behavior can also occur if a corrupted add-in prevents the start of Outlook.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this error message, follow the appropriate sets of steps for the mode you are using.
Try to open Outlook by using the /safe command line switch. For assistance using command line switches, refer to the "More Information" section later.
If Outlook opens successfully by using the /safe switch, disable all add-ins. To do so:
In Outlook, click the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Other tab.
Click Advanced Options, click Add-Ins, and then click to clear all of the items.
Restart Outlook.
If disabling the add-ins does not resolve the behavior, perform a search for Extend.dat and rename the file to Extend.old.
If these steps do not resolve the behavior, try the other suggestions listed below.
For Corporate/Workgroup Mode (CW)
First, create a new profile:
Click Start on the taskbar, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click Mail, click Services, and then click Show Profiles.
Click General, click Add, and then follow the on-screen instructions.
Next, set the new profile as the default profile:
Restart Outlook, and then on the Tools menu, click Options.
Click Mail Services, click Always use this profile, and then click the newly created profile.
Click OK, and then quit and restart Outlook.
Then, create a new personal folder within the new profile:
Click OK to close the error message.
On the Tools menu, click Services.
On the Services tab, click Add.
In the Available information services box, click Personal Folders, and then click OK.
Browse to the drive and folder where you want to store the personal folder, type the name of the folder in the File name box, and then click Open.
In the Create Microsoft Personal Folder dialog box, select the appropriate options for the folder, and then click OK.
For Internet Mail Only Mode (IMO)
First, start Outlook with a new personal folder:
On the Start menu, click Run.
In the Open box, type Outlook.exe /cleanpst, and then click OK.
Then, import the old personal folder file to the new personal folder file:
On the File menu, click Import

This happened to me after I downloaded an update from Microsoft.
I also received a Win 32 Poza worm. I removed the worm but the Outlook problem still exists

I was getting the same error from Outlook (and Word, and WordPad). The solution was to fix my printer setup. I use a printer over a LAN attached to another PC. I had recently messed up my printer so that it was "unavailable". When the default printer is unavailable, Outlook/Word/Wordpad crash shortly after start-up. Fixing the printer (ie. making it available to Outlook/Word/etc.) took care of the problem.

I am having the same problem. Outlook.exe has generated errors.

Just started on my Win2000 pro system. Could this be because of an update from Microsoft or maybe McAfee???
