Windows 98 second edition deleted C:\WINDOWS&# Post a Reply
From: Tom on 04/27/2003
I have an AMD-K6 166MHz with 64 MB of Ram and a 20 GB Harddrive running Windows 98 second edition. Recently the two files both: C:\WINDOWS\system\VMM32\vcache.VXD and
C:\WINDOWS\system\VMM32\VCACHE.VXD
were deleted somehow. Now I can not boot Windows and think that I might have to reload Windows. Any ideas????

Have you got you're emergency boot up disk. Press F8 COMMAND PROMPT ONLY. When you reach command prompt type, Scanreg/restore and you should find five copies of you're earlier regerstries and pick one. That works only if you shut you're computer off , because Windows makes a copy of you're files.

just copy the same file from another system and paste in the same path C:\WINDOWS\system\VMM32\vcache.VXD ...it will atomatically retrieve the problem...

if you still have your windows setup disc you can have a look for these files in the cab files on the disc itself. then copy and past them back into the correct folder on your hard-drive. I couldn't tell you which cab file these files may be in but you can have a look yourself. use winzip or similar to open the cab files.
