My name is Jon-

I have a sony vaio laptop with windows xp home. When I reboot is say, "
Windows could not start because the following file is misisng or currupt:
<windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
Please Re-install a copy of the above file.

This would not be to much of a problem, but my cd drive is broken. HOW CAN I REFORMAT,OR FIX THIS???????????
If it helps I have another sony laptop of the same model and os, and specs.

I tried making a boot disk with the file on it, but I could not copy it?

Any help would be steller, thanx.
