AOL 8.0 and Windows 98 don't seem to along.... Post a Reply
From: ABCMIKE on 03/05/2003
Have Windows 98 and Installed AOL 8.0 about a month ago. Ever since this time my system has been acting up. AOL seems unwilling to help out. My PC has 128MB Ram which should be enought. Any suggestions will help. I know this is a problem with many users and I have found no solutions. Uninstalling the AOL software doesn't help because some files are left in the system.

I too was losing my mind w/AOL and win98 and here's the deal..You can try AOL 4.0 or 5.0 (at least they install without error messages). I could get on AOL, they even let me check my billing, but when I went to a link the computer would freeze up. This is how I got to finally surf the web. I right click the AOLtray icon and hit exit and set it to come on next time , in case I want to access the options. Now start AOL, after it gives you the 'welcome screen',etc. sign off. AOL will now download some files to update your features, then the welcome window closes and a little window with the AOL icon man will appear. As the files are installed the little man starts walking, when he freezes mid-installation hit ctrl/alt/delete for task manager. When it comes up it says "WAOL not responding" - so end that task. AOL will work now, but you have to do this every time you start your computer. A pain but if your desperate it works.

Several possible fixes:

1. Open the "AOL system information" program. On my computer it can be found at: "C:\Program Files\Common Files\aolshare\sysinfo\sinf.exe"
Under the "utilities" tab, click the "uninstall aol adapter" (aol can't be running). When aol reloads, it will reinstall the network adapter--i think it then needs a reboot. This may help.

2. Delete temporary internet files, including all offline content.

3. If you're using IE 6; go to the add/remove program control panel. Bring-up the Microsoft Internet Explorer dialog, select "repair" and click ok.

Hope this helps...

I have Windows 98 SE and I installed AOL 8.0 on my machine. It installed alright and there were no system conflicts whatsoever. It can dial to get access numbers when I set it up for the first time.

IT CRASHES, THOUGH, every time I try to SIGN ON. On Step 5 "Talking to Network", AOL crashes! What's up with that? There was one and only one time that I passed that step. Before long, it crashed again, saying that WAOL.exe caused some kind of exception or some message like that.

I have 256 MB of RAM, an Athlon 4 1.4 Ghz, and 9 Gigs of free hard disk space. Please help! I would really appreciate it!

I just installed AOL 8.0 on my Windows 98 machine (with 198 Mb RAM). After installation, processed the normal restart for changes to take effect (as prompted by AOL installer software). Now my machine will NOT BOOT UP!!! AOL Tech Support insists it is not their software that caused it (unbelieveable!). My machine will only boot in safe mode and I have not been able to troubleshoot the problem to get it back to normal mode (yes, I unistalled all AOL from machine, yes, scandisk ran and no errors found, yes, defrag ran and everything's OK there). NOW WHAT!?!?!... Any experts out there that can help?... THANKS!!! - Jim C.

Uninstall the aol software again then try restoring your computer so there are no files left on there , this might fix your problem
