DO NOT BUY D-Link PCI Wireless Card DWL-520 Post a Reply
From: Joe on 02/18/2003
It's the stupidest thing I have ever seen, this card works on "PCI v2.2" only!
You get the card and it doesn't even show up on BIOS, the power light on the back of it doesn't light and people have posted all over that it only works with pci 2.2 - some STUPID new 3V standard only on very new motherboards.
I hope D-Link gets all these cards back, they should recall them.
Why didn't someone think to make the new PCI version have a different connector, less pins, move the little guide pin over so that a old card wouldn't fit in a new slot.
Who ever thought this up should be fired! You cost me TWO shipping charges!!
At first you think it's a defective card, not much on the box warning you that it won't work in 99% of all existing computers! The idiots at the place I got it from have no clue, so they just want it back. Then you get another one and same thing!
YOU SON OF A BITCHES WHO DESIGNED PCI 2.2 SHOULD BE RUN OFF THE PLANET!!! STUPID! WAY STUPID!
I hope the retailers send all these cards back to d-link, what a joke. No way to tell if your motherboard has 2.2 or not just by looking. I looked around at a local store and NONE of the motherboards there stated if they had 2.2 or not. STUPID!

DO NOT BUY A D-LINK DWL-520 !

Shortly after posting my previous response, I decided to do a few more tests on my ASUS mboard.

I started by removing all PCI adapters from the system (Sound adapter, modem board, Ethernet adapter), leaving the system with only a graphics adapter and the DWL-520 installed.

I repeated the tests and found that the problem was still present.

The next step was to disable as many of the on-board devices as possible, so I started by disabling the USB support.

That fixed it! The DWL-520 worked perfectly!

I'll try and find a driver update for the USB hardware on that mboard and post here again if this solves the problem.

My tests of the DWL-520 revealed the following:

1. The DWL-520 worked fine on two of my older machines, an A-Bit BP6 (1999) and a 1998-vintage 300MHz Celeron machine.

2. The DWL-520 did not work reliably on an ASUS A7V machine (2001), although it installed correctly, could ping (but only with considerable packet loss), and it could transfer small files.
It seemed to "hang" during the transfer of large files.

3. I therefore don't think the PCI 2.2 issue is the problem, as none of my machines have PCI 2.2, and the DWL-520 worked fine on the older boards.

By "worked fine", I mean:

1. Continuous pings worked. Not one packet was lost over several hours of testing.

2. Large file transfers (100 MB) worked repeatedly. Speed was good.

3. Range was good, although I only tested up to about 30m or so.

So it would seem that the ASUS mboard and the DWL-520 just don't get on with each other.

OK ok, this is a little annoying, but the people that made this don't deserve to be killed

Key words:
DWL-520 problem
DWL-520 does not work
DWL-520 windows 2000

That's right.
I am lucky than Joe. I spent a whole Saturday afternoon figuring it out. I have tried the DWL-520 card on three of my PCs.

Don't waste your time any longer if you found Joe's email.

PCI 2.2 was developed late 2000, you are right it isn't found much, it is the Low Profile PCI for SFF (Small form factor PC's).
