It soumds like a bios checksum error.
Many flash ROM's will try an Emergency boot block restore when this happens.
It reads from floppy a bios flash utility.
Make an MSDOS diskette with autoexec.bat that will automatically flash the bios. You might have to do this with your video card pulled out.
Search for "Emergency Boot block Restore" on the net.
