Do you have more than one partition and OS? If you have recently made changes to another parition on your hard drive, there is a very good change you just have to modifiy the Boot.ini file and relink everything up. This is the second most cause of the infamous missing or corrupt hal.dll error message.

Sounds like your hard drive finally bit the dust. Usually, without any configuration changes and a HAL error message, you most likely have a failed hard drive. A lot of people have this problem with Windows XP. However, this is normal (and new) with Windows XP.
