Make sure your virus software has recent updates. Run a virus scan and see if you can find a virus. There is a trojan that can cause an error message very similar.

There are a lot of programs available with this exact EXE name. However, not one is a regular operating system file. Therefore, this is a program that you have installed (willingly or unwillingly). You may want to check out this website and try to remove an adware program that might be installed in IE:

http://www.imiserver.com/uninstall.html

If it is a legitimate program that you installed (a few out there), then you may try reinstalling the appplication.

Hope this helps.

I just re-read your post and realized that dll files are way too close in naming.

Does 'ME' = Windows ME? If so, my idea will not work. SFC is not supported with Windows ME. It automatically runs every boot.

In addition, did you mean WINSRV.DLL or are you really having problems with Winserv.exe?

My advice would be totally different.

Try going to MSDOS or Command Prompt.

Type:

SFC /scannow

You will need your install CD handy. You may have the wrong version of the WINSRV.DLL file.

Post back if it does not work. I have some other ideas. Please include your operating system if you do. I have a feeling you are running workstation NT4 or server.
