Winword has caused an error in (unknown) Post a Reply
From: andrew on 11/26/2002
me,O2K,
A few seconds after I open Word a box appears saying " Winword has causede an error in (unknown). Winword will now close. If you continue experiencing problems try restarting your computer."
But Word continues to act normally though the box stays on top and can be dragged. Word closes as soon as the box is closed.

I also get a regular box appearing that substitutes "Winword" with "Helpctr". And guess what...I can't get into Help.
Deleting Normal.dot has not affected this.

I am getting a msg:

"winword.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log has been created."

Can anyone suggest the method to avoid this, step wise.

This is happening while opening a few files and not all word files.

Thanks

Bob,

I moved the normal.dot file to the recycle bin and now Word works perfectly.

Thank you very very much for this solution!

What has been posted elsewhere is to rename any 'normal.dot' file to 'normal.bak' or some other name, and word will make a new one when you start it.
Another thing to try is to un-install word, and then rename the program folder for word before re-installing it. It may leave some settings files and such in the folder even after a un-install.
Try scanning for any corrupt files on your system, it may not just be word that has problems and/or more problems may show up as time goes by.

I am having this same problem.
I have tried repairing Word, reinstalling Word, uninstalling and then
reinstalling Word, and reinstalling Microsoft Works suite 2000.

None of this worked.

Please help.

Thank you very much.

Microsoft think there are problems with Autocad graphics files.
Searching for any files containing "Autocad" showed several. The odd thing is that just doing this seems to have solved the problem, after deleting the last 'ghost' Wfile(open) image.

Windows Installer box says :
The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request.

Bullguard virus scan says there are 3 files that could not be opened. I know one is an old X-stream exe but do not know where the other two are. ??

USER.exe caused a fault in explorer, IE stopped working, O2K CD will not open , unexpected error, and system restore cannot restore. after reboot IE gets me here. now I'll try CD.
Things seem to be getting worse.

Before we give you any advice, I would suggest an office 2k repair. Enter install disk and choose the repair option or go to Word's help menu and choose repair to only repair Microsoft Word.

Once you have tried this and also reinstalling Word, then you can post back if you still have the same problems.

Also, if you do a reinstall, make sure to choose ALL the options. Go to the custom install option and choose Microsoft Office. Then click the down arrow and choose 'run all from this computer/hard drive'. This will turn all the boxes to white (from a light grey). This should do a full install for you.

Again, if you still have problems after all this, post back and I will give you a few hints to get you back up and running.
