Roger Pfaff
(In English: delete abnormal long file name extensions (more than 20 Characters) in Registry under Hkey Classes Root, these begin with a DOT e.g. .avi .zip)

I have tried this solution , as well as the one posted on your other URLs , but I can't get to Control Panel - even in SAFE mode. When this message appears, it allows me to select options off the START menu, but when I select CONTROL PANEL , it does not display on the screen . Is there a list of files that I can delete at the command prompt , or can I copy files from another WIN98 system to get this system up again ? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated ! Thanks.

Most likely, your recent upgrade/install did not work well. This is usually caused by an older version of the SHDOC401.dll file. You will need to be sure that you have the current copy for the version of IE that you are running. You can attempt a repair with IE (Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs - select Internet Explorer and choose to 'repair').

If the repair is unsuccessful, uninstall IE and search for the dll file in question. Remove it from the hard drive. Install IE v6.0.

This should fix your problem.
