get "winword has caused an error in winword.e Post a Reply
From: sugar on 11/10/2002
Whenever I try to open a word file, I get "winword has caused an error in winword.exe. Winword will now close." This only happens with one word file, and this particular file is password protected. I have tried deleting Normal.dot, but this does not work. I suspect that since this only happens with one file, there is a problem with that word document. But it is an important file, is there any way to gain access to it or fix the problem? Thank you.

I have been reading about this a lot lately. I have tried many different things but nothing has worked. Whenever I spell check a few documents in word 97, I get the error winword has caused an error... I have tried to reload word, applied all patches avail. I have also tried this on another computer and it did not come up. Is there anything else I can try besides reloading the machine?

Just a thought...

Can you open the file on another computer? I would attempt to do so. If the attempt fails, then you know that it is a problem with the file, rather Winword.

There are a few free/share-ware programs out there on the Internet to unlock these files without a password. You may want to look into this.

Sorry I am not much help. I have never encountered this before. It seems to be most logical to suspect the file.

Another option you might try is to create a new document with password and attempt to open it. Or copy the document and try to open the copy (under a different name).

These are all ideas to help you troublshoot the possibiliy of file corruption or winword problem. I would be very interested in the solution.
