MS Virtual Machine problems using XP Home with Ser Post a Reply
From: Jo S on 11/04/2002
Hi there, me again... well the PC has had a new motherboard, and in that sense all has been well for a week or so. However, last night we got a new problem. At one site there was a prompt telling us that we needed to download the Microsoft Virtual Machine, but when we tried to, it said we had to get Service Pack 1 from Microsoft instead. However we already have SP1, and when it was looking to see what updates we should get, VM wasn't one of them. This led me to think that MSVM is already on here, but for some reason not working properly? Then the thing started to hang, specifically on an *.asp page, locking up Internet Explorer 6 and also apparently causing the mouse to hang (on COM port). The only way out was to switch off and reboot but the problem occurred again. I changed the mouse to a USB one, that seems to work better, but I'm still getting the VM install prompts. Also the event viewer is now logging DCOM errors...where could we be going wrong this time? Thanks in advance for help - Jo

Richard - sorry I'm not with you there. And don't you think it's rather childish to call people stupid, when you don't even know them?

Let me get this right, you want to allow people you don't know to send you a program and run it on your computer?
Why would anyone be that stupid?

Thanks, I'm learning all the time. For Tess and others - VM = Virtual Machine, you need this plugin for some Java sites. I've now got hold of a thing called Java 2 Runtime Environment / Web start which seems to work nicely. I believe there was some legal dispute between Microsoft and Sun Systems which led to the non-inclusion of the VM in XP. But it seems you need support for Java for a variety of stuff, from gaming to business. I came across scrolling menus done by a professional web developer using this, and the Yahoo games services do as well.

Try this first...

Go to your WINNT or Windows directory on your primary hard drive. Find the folder, 'Downloaded Program Files' that has the little Internet Explorer icon. Delete all the plugins in this folder.

This will also delete any other plugins but you can always quickly install them again when you visit a site that requires a particular plugin.

This will rule out a corrupt VM plugin file.

If this does not work, I would reinstall SP1. This time, I would NOT do the backup. Then I would attempt to install the VM plug in. Microsoft has been really picky about the VM plugin. They refused to include it with the default install of XP to offer an option to get the plug in somewhere else. I am not sure who else would have the plug in for Internet Explorer. IF you find out, then this might be another option.

Hope this helps..
