FATAL EXCEPTION 0167:BFF7282D Post a Reply
From: Zach on 10/22/2002
EVERYTIME I play a computer game... I get an error saying this (blue screen):

FATAL EXCEPTION o167:BFF7282D

It's random... sometimes I can play fora bout 15 min. and nothing will happen... sometimes 5 min. It varies.

I'm asking for help. I have limited knowledge of computers and was wondering if there was an update, or possibly is this a Software or Hardware problem???

THANK YOU
- Zach

This is what the manufacturer has to say:

This is another site devoted to the issue:

If you ask me, I would think about another video card. You can always return it if it does not solve your problem. However, I already know that it should get rid of most of your error messages if not all.

Try this, go spend a little bit and buy a new hard drive then download from mandrake.com for free and burn the three CDs and install them on the new HD and use that for several weeks.
Come back and let us know if the computer stops crashing.
I have a typical up time of more than 60 days with no crashes, no lost wordprocessor documents, and I can relax and not save things every 2 minutes or worry about every virus that comes along. The only reason it's 60 days is I left for vacation and turned it off.

Definitely a video card issue. The GeForce 400 series cards have conflicts with Win9X operating systems and via chipset or Athlon Thunderbird processors. You can do a search for this on the board and see there are quite a few that have dealt with this issue. There is no one method to fix this. However, there are a few websites on the internet devoted to fixing the issue.

I have an

-AMD ATHLON 1.2 GHZ

-256 MEGS OF DDR RAM

-GEFORCE 2 MX 400 64 MEGS

-WINDOWS 98SE

I upgraded my video card drives... so I don't think that would be the problem.

Wow.

Didn't expect all the replies!

Thanks for all the comments. Although I'm considering the memory and video card issue. Is this error one of those errors that could be ten different things... or???

Thanks.

This error message is a new one for me. However, it fits the profile of a overheating problem or video card issue. I would try updating the video card driver and checking to make sure all your fans are running (power input fan and CPU fan). You may need to open your computer to be sure.

It seems that logic would point to a video card problem considering the error message is occuring during gaming. This usually indicates high-end usage of the video card. You may try changing your screen resolution/color size as a test. Also try changing some of your graphic card settings. Some people have programmed third party programs to control the clock speed of particular video cards. I might suggest you see if you can find software to accomplish this. I have used variations of drivers in the past with great success.

Hope this helps.

FYI - I don't think Linix is going to fix your blue screen. Also, in this case if you did a reinstall of the operating system, you would get the same error message.

Do a search here with "167:B", I found these messages and a lot more.
You should also state what CPU, memory that you have but generally try removing programs to see which one is causing this.
If you can buy those removeable drive bays you can then have a game (clean) install of windows HDD without any other programs installed and a "work" HDD.
Or you could run a non crashing OS like Linux that is very windows working on another HDD and use that when you want to get something done without losing important work.

I had this same problem and it drove me crazy. I finally found (by accident)that it was due
to a copy of pcAnywhere that I had on the computer. It was an old one that I think was
version 5.X and was written during QuarterDeck days. I now run a later version and have
not had the problem

Try swapping out your RAM. Typically, OE errors with 0167:???????? are memory errors. It
worked for me.
