win95 startup problem Post a Reply
From: Harry on 05/03/1999
I have a 200mhz Gateway using win95 as operating system
In the morning when I start up, win95 begins to load
and when it finally gets to the opening screen where
the password block usually appears, I get a blank green
screen with a bright yellow stripe across the top and
computer hangs. I re-boot several times and finally
get through. It is ok for the rest of the day.

One time I did get a hangup while loading at a line
that said "bad pnp serial checksun device serial no o984422"

Will appreciate any help.

Isn't it nice how they make these errors human readable? Like something else is going to read them...

Too bad it didn't tell you what device that was. Sounds like you may have a bad connection to a card or something. Any chance you can remove your cards and clean the connections with a CLEAN pencil eraser? I mean if you have that ability that is, don't mess in there if you don't know what you are doing.

Also a slim chance it might be a IC on a card that is "popping out" meaning it needs to be pushed back in it's socket. Is the motherboard very old?

You could also start up in safe mode (press the F2 key as it boots or the F8 key) and do a step by step start up and see where it starts, that might tell you what card is causing the problem (if it's a card).

Let us know if this works for you.
