The programs are all standby types: a scheduler, a launch pad, an automatic backup program, et al. None of the are in operation without icons as you suggested, and ctl-alt-del doesn't help. This is an new installation of w98 and I am only now bringing up my old applications.

I stupidly omitted one very important fact, during the boot and error message appears that, in the detail section, says: "EXPLORER caused an illegal page fault in module EXPLORER.EXE at 015f:0040c191." This error occurs even when W98 is booted in the safe mode. I have all the details on registers, stack dump, etc. if that will be of help. I had originally thought of this as a separate problem but it may be the cause of this.

When explorer.exe is not operating properly the task bar tray will also not function correctly. Try the system file checker mentioned in the post below to see if that helps before a complete windows restoration.
