Winword has caused an error in MSO9.DLL. Winword Post a Reply
From: Anthony on 07/17/2002

I get that message with all my MS Office 2000 Pro (SR-1) applications. But replace Winword with Msaccess for Access, Osa9 for open or new office document. I'm assuming this is the same problem that's causing my computer to come unstable when I open Excel. Also assuming the same problem with PowerPoint, I open it the program will open with no menus or options and it won't close when I close the program making me to "end task" the program.

Any idea what could be causing this?

I'm running Windows ME, MS Office 2000 Professional. I tried restarting, uninstall-reinstall and repair. MSO9.DLL is in the right folder.

Thanks,
Anthony

This is a problem with SR-1. Reinstall Office and install all the latest updates for office and you should be good.

I found it easier to reinstall word on top of itself rather than trying to figure out what files are missing, the repair option of word did not fix the problem but if you reinstall it, in the same drive and directory it was previously on, it works as if nothing was ever wrong, and all your existing docs are still accessible..

Install Windows XP Professional, or, better still, Unix. Windows ME was released unfinished and as such is the worst running OS in the world.

Most times when a user gets this error message, it is actually a plugin or Visual Basic issue. I find (this is opinion) that a recent software application installed with some sort of interraction with Office 2000 (plugin) will create a conflict on startup of one or more Office applications (giving you the error you received).

I would estimate that your updated version of MSO9.DLL is not getting along with a plug in that is designed to use the older version you had. I would try troubleshooting what applications you installed recently that might have some sort of Office funtion (Adobe Acrobat -not reader, the whole thing, Dragon Naturally Speaking, Postal stamp software, TextBridge, and the list goes on for fifteen years).

Another possibility is a corrupt template. The normal.dot is a good spot to start off with. Any of the applications start with a blank template that sometimes can become corrupt.

Also, do you have any custom menus or options (add in manager) with any of your Office Applications? These also initialize at startup and can create errors if the code has become corrupt or was not written correctly. Run a debug on this if you are familiar with Visual Basic. A good example of this would be the Auto Save Addin for Excel.

Hope this gets you started. Feel free to post back with more info on your troubleshooting to get more advice.

I upgraded to Windows XP overnight. But I'm still getting the same basic error. I opened Excel, it waited for a bit. Then it went on to sending an error to Microsoft then it shut down. Power Point did not fix completely, when I ever want to change the font it gave me a Kernal32.dll error when I was on ME, now it just shuts down on XP. Help please! I got Word and Access to work by just replacing the MSO9.DLL file.

Alright, well I got Word, Access and Powerpoint to open by just downloading a new updated version of the MSO9.DLL file and deleting the other version. But however, when I try to open Excel I get a blue screen saying "Either your systems has become busy or unstable." And of course it gives you the lovely options of hitting any key to see if it fixes itself or hit ctrl-alt-del to restart. Tried uninstalling-reinstalling, repairing, nothing has worked. Any suggestions? I have Office 2000 and Windows ME.

Thanx,
Tony
