WINWORD - GPF in USER.EXE Post a Reply
From: Steve on 05/23/1999
I recently reformatted my system disk and installed Win 98. After reinstalling Office 97 Pro, I now get a GPF in USER.EXE every time I start WORD and when I load a template in EXCEL. I have tried uninstalling Office Pro and installing Office Standard - same crash ! Any ideas ?

I run winME and OfficeXP.
Only winword would have the USER.EXE error as listed in the other posts. As soon as I deleted normal.dot WORD was up and running perfectly thanks guys.

Dave, you rock. Had the exact same problem with MS Word, found the normal.dot file, deleted it, and everything is cool again. Thanks.

Hi Dave

I found this entry by entering WORD and USER.EXE to GOOGLE
because today, I had a similar error: GPF in USER.EXE.
(The days before, I did not get this error. Instead, the WinME
system hang. I tried to deinstall/reinstall Word - no success.
I even reinstalled my WinME, which needed me 5 tries until it finally
worked - anyway.)
I searched for this file: normal.dot.
Found it !!!! It is from 22.3.2003, just the day my Word
did not work anymore the 1st time.
I deleted it, and since then I'm able to work normal again.
Dave, THANK YOU SO MUCH for dropping this experience to the net.
Without you, I would have started to try to get my system back
to the very 1st state, by deleting everything (games, name it)
but I'm sure that this would not have been helped me
for this problem.
Thanks again.

I had a similar problem. One day after Word had been working fine for a year, I was not able to open any Word file without a "user.exe" error and a freeze. On this message board was a simple solution was posted to this problem.

Do a search for a file called ( normal.dot )

If you find it, simply delete this file and Word will work fine again. I don't know why, but it worked for me. Word has been working perfect for the last 3 months. I don't know where the file came from,
but even uninstalling and reinstalling Word did not help.

Finish your solution. It will work.

Instead of dos, boot to SAFE MODE (F8 at startup). This will be much easier. This will usually free up the file for rename.

Same here, except I'm in Mellinnium OS. Attempting to open a WORD document or the program itself causes a system freeze or the message "Winword has caused an error in USER.EXE" I've uninstalled and reinstalled, even tried REPAIR WORD but no change. At first I got a Rpccs is bad message. Microsoft said finde Rpcss.exe and rename it to Rpcss.ex_ but its always in use. My family "wizard" said maybe thru DOS it can be renamed but haven't tried that as yet. ANYONE HAD ANY SUCCESS FIXING THIS PROBLEM??

: It sounds like the typical DLL overwrite problem. When you installed Office it probably wrote over a DLL that was working good on your system. You may have answered "yes" for it to replace the DLL, or even worse, it NEVER ASKED if you wanted to overwrite it and just did it anyway.

: And how were you suposto know if the DLL should be overwritten? I think that even Mr. Gates doesn't know that one.

: You may be able to use the System File Checker (more info in our knowledgebase about that) to find out what DLL (or other file) got screwed up, then maybe get back off your Win98 disk.

: Since you just installed Win98, it should know exactly what files have changed.

: : I recently reformatted my system disk and installed Win 98. After reinstalling Office 97 Pro, I now get a GPF in USER.EXE every time I start WORD and when I load a template in EXCEL. I have tried uninstalling Office Pro and installing Office Standard - same crash ! Any ideas ?
