System hangs and freezes Post a Reply
From: Rob on 06/02/1999
We have a Hewlett Packard vectra VL 133 Pentium, 64 megs of ram8.4 gig hard drive(new)O/S Win 98. Our computer often hangs to the point where we have to power down the cpu and restart. Have tried nearly all 3rd party crash prevention software and reinstalling Win 98 on clean hard drive. System still freezes at random, any ideas will be very helpfull please.

: I hope you used the knowledgebase here and found some answers, try "ram" or "memory" or "irq" as keywords for search.

: My guess is that you are having either IRQ problems or hardware problems such as RAM. If it's a new computer I would take it in to where you got it ASAP!

: Try a minimum system, minimum cards installed, min memory and such and see if the problem goes away. Then as you add stuff you will probably find your problem.

Hey Nate thought you might want to get a follow-up on this situation.Tried to have Microsoft Corp. help with this, they were no help. One night back in late October,I stumbled on a setting in my BIOS,in the memory and cache settings,my system was allowing both internal and external caching,i disabled the external caching, and guess what,NO MORE CRASHES :).System runs as smooth as can be,thnx for the ideas, they led me to the right path.

Thanks for the feedback, it looks like it was a RAM problem after all, your external cache RAM may have problems, or maybe you don't have any? I would complain to HP / get a new motherboard anyway. Who knows what else might be wrong. Or maybe they don't turn that option on and your CMOS (BIOS) settings got trashed somehow. Wonder what happens to that setting if you set them to "factory default"?

I guess those programs that you used to check stuff missed the problems with the cache, or wasn't able to check it?

Glad I could help.
