Windows has crashed completely. Post a Reply
From: Patricia on 07/21/2000
I have a 486 PC. When I turn on my computer, I see "PCI read configuration problem". And when it is finished loading, I get a message: "VMM32.vxd file is needed to run Windows; you may have to reinstall Windows". I have a Windows98 startup disk and I also have the Windows98 CD, but am unable to reinstall. I cannot get past the C prompt. I have tried everything I can think of. I hope it is not beyond repair. Please help!!

PS: The computer originally crashed when my nephew tried to install Windows 2000. My computer was not equipped with the proper tools for this program, but being eager to load, he did not look for what was needed and I was not home at the time.

Thank you, Patricia

Patricia.

Is it so after installing Win98 when u reboot it complains to not find that specific VXD.
Does it say where it wants it to be like in systems folder,if so then try to extract the specific file and try witha boot up disk reach the c: drive and find the systems folder and insert the VXD file that is missing.
See if that works , but then its has to be the error i ask about if its not close to it then this might not work.
By the way for what i know Win 2000 cant handle a 486 its to weqak in cpu power u would need to uppgrade to a more powerful pc.

Hope it all works out
Ola

: : Patricia,

: : Can you access your CD-Rom prompt? I assume that your CD-Rom is on D: from the C-prompt type in D:/. Can you get to D:? If not, then Windows 2000 could have wiped out your CD-Rom driver in favor of its own newer one. You may have to reformat.

: Yes, I am able to access my CD-Rom prompt, but my guru created an extra drive with 1 gig and that is my D drive so my CD-Rom drive is E. I am able to access the WINDOWS98 CD but because of the VM332.vxd file, I am unable to install it. I do not know how to reformat? If it is too dificult or wordy to give me the instructions here, could you recommend a book or CD that would give me the exact instructions. (My guru is on vacation at this time and I would really like to learn the necessary steps for the reformatting process for future reference.)

: Thank you.
