: If I reformat my computer, what exactly must I have available to put everything back in? I have a startup disk and I have a windows 98 CD. Would I need anything other than this? Do I type format c at the prompt and then use startup disk and CD?

Hello Paricia
You need a W98 Startup Disk and your W98 CD-ROM
If your HD is partitioned, put first in one of them
your personal stuff(mail,documents,pictures etc)
and then you can procede to reinstall W98:
1-insert the W98 StUp diskette in drive A,the W98 CD-ROM and restart your PC.When you'll receive on
your screen a 3 rows menu,choose "CD-Rom support" ENT
and wait untill the W98 StUp diskette will install
the CD-Rom drivers and all the other necessary files
2-when you have A:\> type format c: ENT
and confirm the operation when prompted
3-when have again A:\> type the CD-Rom letter :
if your HD has 3 partitions C,D,E then CD-Rom is
usually F;so it will be A:\>f: Enter
4-then F:\>cd win98 Ent
F:\win98\>setup Ent and the installation will
start and lead you. After that you'll need to install
your video,audio,modem drivers.
observations:
1)Sometime the letter of CD-Rom is pushed one step back
so you may need to try E:\win98\>setup
2)If your PC doesn't reach the boot menu, you need to
restart it and enter BIOS SETUP and there you'll
find in one of those setting sectors C,A sequence
which you need to change into A,C
Have a smooth W98 installation
