: Found reference in Microsoft support site re: L2 cache, did not apply. Found another reference to USB device problems. When I checked Device Mgr, there were two unknown USB devices listed and marked with red 'X's. I deleted them with no effect on problem.

Well, I replaced the Graphics card, which ha sbeen giving me problems, and it cortrected the problem. The system booted fine. I do not know if that is the solution, but it worked for me. I am running Win98_SE on an old 200 Mhz system.
