 configmg error Post a Reply

On HP Pavilion:

"While initializing Device CONFIGMG: Windows protection Error. You need to restart your computer."

Machine had been working fine for several months on network. No recent HW/SW installed.

Found reference in Microsoft support site re: L2 cache, did not apply. Found another reference to USB device problems. When I checked Device Mgr, there were two unknown USB devices listed and marked with red 'X's. I deleted them with no effect on problem.

I reinstalled CONFIGMG.VXD from CDROM, again with no effect.

Darren : you will never read this since it's 5 years ago you posted but I'm still running Win ME on one drive and had the configmg error. After reading several sites etc., for solutions. Solutions that revolved around updating bios, changing vid cards, motherboards, and other equally drastic actions I followed up on your solution first since it seemed the easiest. Hey it worked! Thanks sooooooo much. Hopefully life's been good to you these past 5 years. Thanks again.

I had this problem with a PC that was stable for a long time and suddenly displayed this error on startup. No new HW or SW had been installed recently. I happenned to have a backup of my WINDOZ\SYSTEM directory on another drive and did a file compare of all .VXD files in new vs. old System directory after starting the PC in DOS mode. I found the following files were different but still had the same date/time stamp (I can only assume this means they were corrupted).
PCI.VXD
VSDATA95.VXD
DCAPVXD.VXD
I replaced PCI.VXD and DCAPVXD.VXD with the backup versions. There was a sharing violation trying to copy VSDATA95.VXD so I did not replace it. The computer started properly on the next reboot.

I had a Pent. 166mmx running Win95 with this error. It too had been running without any problems. On 12/25/02, this error occured. I followed instructions on here and on Mircosofts page with no success. I replaced the Video Card per there was no L2 Cash to replace. ( this was on a Gateway Pent 166mmx). The video card did not solve the problem. I also removed and reinstalled all the system devices and no luck. I then on a Hunch, replaced the Processor. This FIXED the issue.

Well, I replaced the Graphics card, which ha sbeen giving me problems, and it cortrected the problem. The system booted fine. I do not know if that is the solution, but it worked for me. I am running Win98_SE on an old 200 Mhz system.

Been having the same problem. Attempts to boot into safe mode end with explorer failures. Tried 2 different hard disks with fresh formats/installations. The longest the machine would run was 8 hours before the same errors. Seems like it's board-related. Thoughts?
