Well - I fixed it but I still don't believe it !!!

I tried installing OFFICE2000 Premium Service Release 1, convinced that this would sort it out..... SAME PROBLEM!
Then I started de-installing everything : IE5.5 / NORTON / etc, etc down to bare-bones.... Just WIN98SE and Office 2000....SAME PROBLEM.

As a last resort, I started deleting devices/peripherals/cards ......

And here is the solution : !!!!!.........

********************************************
*''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''*
*''DELETE your PRINTER/S and re-install !!'*
*''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''*
********************************************

I suspect the problem was caused by installing the printer -before- I installed Office2000... if that makes sense to anyone....

However - I am happy to say that WINWORD no longer crashes !!

I HOPE THIS WORKS FOR YOU TOO !!!!

Cheers
Ken.E

Forget about all the complicated solutions that don't do anything. Go to the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office file and find the WINWORD.exe file. Right click and look at the properties...go to the compatability tab and make sure the box is NOT CHECKED OFF. It solved my problem...Joe

Renaming normal.dot without reinstalling Word worked on my WindowsME for this problem. Many thanks!

: I had the same trouble and it drove me crazy, but I've also fixed it by deleting/renaming the normal.dot file after reinstalling. (Maybe all you need to do is rename normal.dot, without reinstalling. I don't know). How did I know to do this? I went to Microsoft's Word site, and read through their page on "Things to Try Before You Call Technical Support." A beautiful thing to try is the "a/ switch feature." Suddenly, everything works again.

: Hi Bee

: I had tried this - without success....

: I subscribe to Microsoft TECHNET. Not even the June-2001 edition has a suitable explanation for this problem......

: Thanks for the advice...

Hi Bee

I had the same error message several times and even after uninstalling and reinstalling still got the same message. I tried your solution and it worked perfectly.
I searched for the normal.dot file renamed it and hey presto everything is back.

I'm running Windows ME, 256 RAM, 850 AMD.

Once again many thanks

James
