Cant Defrag, Cant Scandisk either Post a Reply
From: SlabTzu on 06/20/2001
The defrag and the ScanDisk programs claim that my 256ram 850 Anthlon processor does not have enough memory to run and that I should try shutting off one or more programs and try again. Well I took everything out of start up and nothing. I went to safe mode and nothing. I took off the clock and disabled all sorts off stuff that might be taking memory and nothing. I downloaded programs that tell me whats taking the memory and how much and I have concluded that this can not be a memory problem. I reinstalled windows "without reformatting the drive" and still nothing. Certain programs cant run anymore claiming that the drive is too fragmented or that "the file allocation table has invalid entries". This is turning out to be really depressing. Can anyone please help out?

Scandisk only works when windows is shut off improperly but only in standard mode and not thorough which is what I think I really need to do. But when I try to run scandisk through windows I cant do standard and I cant do thourough either.

This could have two different causes. First, it could simply be because you have more files and folders than SCANDISK can handle - theoretically 52,416 but practically somewhat less. See MS Knowledgebase Article Q132832. The other cause is related to cluster sizes. If you have a drive larger than 8GB and cluster size less than 8KB, it will overwhelm SCANDISK. Older versions of Ghost and Partition Magic can cause this problem on large drives because they set cluster size to 4KB.

On IBM's site, they recommend repartitioning the drive with a current utility.

: I've seen this problem before. I think it had something to do with the fat table. You can email me at Lenney97@yahoo.com or find me on AIM, sn Lenney1

Do you use any McAfee products? I had this problem as well and I believe McAfee was to blame.
Try uninstalling any McAfee AV software (or any AV software as they often run in the background without our knowledge) and make sure it doesn't try to run at startup. To stop it running at startup, go to Start --> Run and then type MSCONFIG and press return and then clear the McAfee references from the Startup tab (make sure you don't tick Explorer or systray as they are needed)
If you still have trouble, boot into Safe Mode and run Scandisk first and then Defrag the hard drive. It should work with no problems. Good luck.
